Original job description

The Role

As an AI Engineer Co-op at Symplistic.ai, you will work directly with our engineering team to design, develop, test, and deploy enterprise AI applications and AI agents.

You will gain hands-on experience building production software involving generative AI, agentic AI, retrieval systems, enterprise integrations, APIs, and modern software engineering practices. You will contribute throughout the development lifecycle, from technical research and prototyping through testing, deployment, and iteration.

Symplistic.ai is an enterprise AI company with operations in Canada and the United States. We build AI agents, enterprise AI products, and custom AI solutions that integrate with organizations’ existing data, systems, and workflows.

What You’ll Work On

  1. Build AI agents and AI-powered software applications using Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, APIs, large language models, retrieval systems, and enterprise software technologies.
  1. Design and implement AI workflows and enterprise integrations, including integrations between AI systems, APIs, databases, knowledge repositories, and customer applications.
  1. Prototype, test, benchmark, and evaluate different technical approaches to AI engineering challenges, including retrieval, agent workflows, model behaviour, accuracy, performance, and system reliability.

You will also:

  • Contribute to the development of Symplistic.ai products and internal engineering tools.
  • Build and improve retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), knowledge retrieval, and AI-agent workflows.
  • Develop backend services, APIs, data-processing pipelines, and integrations.
  • Work with enterprise AI technologies including IBM watsonx and other modern AI platforms.
  • Participate in technical research, experimentation, prototyping, and performance evaluation.
  • Test alternative approaches to unresolved engineering problems and document technical results.
  • Build automated tests and evaluate AI-system accuracy, reliability, and performance.
  • Work with structured and unstructured enterprise data.
  • Participate in code reviews and follow software engineering best practices.
  • Maintain technical documentation, experiment results, and development records.
  • Collaborate with engineers and business stakeholders to translate real-world requirements into production AI solutions.
  • Contribute across the full software lifecycle: design, development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and iteration.

What We’re Looking For

You are currently studying toward a degree or diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Information Technology, or a closely related technical field.

You should have:

  • Experience programming in Python.
  • Experience with JavaScript or TypeScript.
  • Understanding of software development fundamentals, data structures, APIs, and databases.
  • Interest in artificial intelligence, generative AI, machine learning, and agentic AI.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interest in building production systems rather than only academic prototypes.

Experience with any of the following is an asset:

  • LLMs and generative AI
  • RAG and vector databases
  • AI agents and workflow orchestration
  • IBM watsonx
  • OpenAI or comparable AI platforms
  • REST APIs
  • SQL / NoSQL databases
  • React or modern frontend development
  • Cloud infrastructure
  • Docker / containers
  • Git and GitHub
  • Automated testing and evaluation frameworks

Co-op Eligibility

This position is intended to be a formal post-secondary co-op/work-integrated learning placement.

Applicants must:

  • have already commenced their academic program before the work placement begins;
  • be enrolled in a program directly related to the work performed in this position; and
  • be eligible to have this placement approved, monitored, and certified by their Ontario college or university as part of an official co-op or internship program.

The Placement

This is a 12-month paid co-op placement running from January through December 2027. The student will work as a fixed-term employee of Symplistic.ai Canada Inc. and will receive ongoing supervision, technical mentorship, performance feedback, and practical work-integrated learning throughout the placement.

The role is based at our Canadian headquarters:

7050 Weston Road, Suite 224

Woodbridge, Ontario L4L 8G7

Type: Full-time, 12-month co-op

Hours: 40 hours per week

Compensation: $23 CAD/hour

The position follows a hybrid work model, with approximately three days per week in office.

Why Symplistic.ai

Our engineering team develops AI agents and custom software integrations for enterprise environments, from initial prototyping through production deployment. That matches the type of AI/software work already described in Symplistic.ai’s current AI Software Developer role. Symplistic.ai
