Original job description

SYNERGY NORTH CORPORATION distributes electricity to approximately 50,000 residential customers and 6,000 commercial customers located in Thunder Bay and Kenora, Ontario. It is our mission to provide outstanding energy services in a safe, reliable, and trusted manner to our communities in order to power people’s lives.

A career as a Powerline Technician is about more than poles and wires. Every day, our Lines and Operations team helps deliver safe, reliable electricity to the homes, businesses, hospitals, schools, and industries that people depend on. As demand for electricity continues to grow, so does the need for skilled trades professionals who are committed to safety, reliability, excellence and service.

We are seeking motivated, safety focused individuals who are eager to learn a challenging and rewarding trade. As a Powerline Technician Apprentice, you will work alongside experienced Journeypersons, gaining the knowledge and experience required to construct, maintain, and restore the electrical infrastructure that supports the communities we serve.

If you are looking for a career that offers meaningful work, continuous learning, professional development, and the opportunity to contribute to your community, we invite you to join our team and begin your journey toward becoming a Power Line Technician.

What You Will Do:

Construct, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, inspect, and operate overhead and underground electrical distribution systems
Perform approved live line work on voltages up to and including 25kV
Install and replace poles, transformers, conductors, switchgear, and related electrical infrastructure
Perform switching, isolation, grounding, testing, and restoration activities in accordance with utility procedures and the Utility Work Protection Code
Respond to outages, emergencies, storm restoration, and mutual assistance assignments
Complete inspections and documentation in accordance with Ontario Regulation 22/04 and utility standards
Operate utility vehicles and specialized line equipment safely and effectively
Support apprentice development through mentorship, leadership, and demonstration of safe work practices
Participate in standby rotations, emergency response activities, training, and continuous improvement initiatives

Qualified Candidates Will Possess:

Minimum Grade 12 diploma
A clean driving record and the ability to obtain and maintain an Ontario Class "AZ Restricted" driver's licence
Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and the ability to safely use tools, equipment, and machinery
Strong communication, interpersonal, customer service, and teamwork skills
Sound problem solving skills, good judgement, and a willingness to learn
A demonstrated commitment to safety and safe work practices
The ability to successfully participate in and complete all requirements of the Powerline Technician Apprenticeship Program

The Following Would Be Considered Assets:

Completion of, or enrollment in, a Powerline Technician, Electrical Technician, Electrical Technologist, Utility Arborist, or related trades program
Previous experience in construction, utilities, heavy equipment operation, forestry, telecommunications, electrical work, or other outdoor trades environments
Experience operating trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, aerial devices, or related equipment
Current First Aid, CPR, and WHMIS certifications
Experience working safely in physically demanding environments and as part of a crew

Working Conditions and Employment Requirements This is a safety sensitive position that requires the Apprentice to work outdoors in a variety of weather and environmental conditions, at heights, and in confined spaces. Candidates must be willing and able to participate in overtime, standby rotations, and shift work, and respond to outages and emergency situations. Candidates must also be willing and able to travel and work outside the service territory to support mutual assistance and operational needs, meet the physical demands associated with the position, successfully pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, and successfully pass a Police Information Check.

What We Offer We offer a rewarding career with competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, ongoing training and development opportunities, and the support of a skilled team that takes pride in serving its community. Supported by a strong safety culture and a commitment to operational excellence, you will build your skills, grow your career, and help power people's lives every day.

Applications will be reviewed starting October 9, 2026, and will continue to be accepted until position is filled.

These positions are currently vacant, and artificial intelligence may be used in the screening process.
