Original job description

We’re searching for a Manager, People Relations. Are you searching for new possibilities?

Strong employee relations help build a workplace where people feel supported, leaders feel equipped, and challenging situations are handled thoughtfully and effectively. We’re looking for an experienced Manager, People Relations to lead this important work at Westland. This is a hybrid role based at our Head office in Surrey, BC.

As Manager, People Relations, you’ll combine hands-on expertise with people leadership and the opportunity to drive meaningful change. You’ll lead and develop the People Relations Advisor, advise on complex and sensitive workplace issues, and partner with business leaders to find practical solutions to challenging people decisions. You’ll also help shape the future of the People Relations practice by strengthening processes, building manager capability, using data to inform decisions, and exploring how emerging technology can improve the way we work.

Expected Compensation: The expected hiring range for this role is $93,600 to $117,000 based on a 35-hour work week. Your rate of pay will be determined based on your individual qualifications and experience, while considering internal equity.

Westland also offers a competitive annual short-term incentive program that enables employees to share in the rewards of the business and emphasizes the measures that are key to our success.

Westland is committed to continuous learning where employees can grow their potential and write the stories of their careers. Financial assistance is available for approved work-related training/development courses leading to certification, and programs that offer professional development, including seminars and conferences.

Discover what’s possible, with Westland.

The Westland story is all about growth, and that means plenty of possibility for everyone on our team. Every day, Westland proves that building a great business means taking care of communities, clients, and each other with equal commitment. As we continue to open new doors, we're inviting amazing people like you to join us.

As Manager, People Relations, you’ll have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on how Westland supports its people and leaders. Combining your employee relations expertise with people leadership and a continuous improvement mindset, you’ll help strengthen the function, build organizational capability, and shape a more proactive approach to workplace relations as Westland continues to grow.

Why you'll love Westland:

An open, flexible, and welcoming workplace
Plenty of opportunities to grow and learn
Autonomy to drive your own success
Be part of an inclusive culture alongside an extraordinarily talented community of people with diverse backgrounds
A total rewards program that supports your financial, physical, and mental well-being

Why we’ll love You:

You bring 10 or more years of progressive experience in employee relations, labour relations, employment law, or a related HR discipline, including at least 3 years leading an employee relations or HR business partner team.
Have hands-on experience managing complex and sensitive employee relations matters and workplace investigations, including advising on performance management, discipline, accommodations, terminations, and other challenging workplace situations.
Bring strong working knowledge of Canadian employment legislation, human rights, occupational health and safety, privacy, and related workplace requirements, with the ability to translate requirements into practical guidance.
You build trusted relationships and influence stakeholders through sound judgment, clear communication, and a collaborative approach. You’re skilled at consultation, facilitation, mediation, negotiation, and can communicate complex findings and recommendations clearly to leaders and senior stakeholders.
Have experience supporting a unionized environment, interpreting collective agreements, or managing grievances; this is an asset.
You’re passionate about improving processes and service delivery, with experience using data, technology, automation, or workflow improvements to drive better outcomes.
Bring strong leadership skills and a passion for coaching and developing others, managing competing priorities, and building a high-performing team.
Hold a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Labour Relations, Business Administration, Law, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Relevant professional certifications are an asset.

Once here, you'll:

Lead, coach, and develop the People Relations team, setting priorities, managing workloads, and supporting consistent, high-quality service delivery.
Manage complex employee relations matters and workplace investigations involving concerns such as misconduct, harassment, discrimination, retaliation, and workplace conflict, providing practical, risk-informed guidance from assessment through resolution.
Partner with business leaders and People & Performance colleagues to navigate challenging employment decisions involving performance, conduct, attendance, accommodations, leaves, and terminations, while strengthening manager capability and supporting effective people management
Collaborate with Legal and external advisors on complex employment and labour relations matters, including grievances, collective agreement interpretation, and preparation for mediation or arbitration where applicable.
Strengthen the People Relations practice by improving intake, triage, escalation criteria, case management, documentation standards, tools, and resources to support consistent, high-quality service
Use case trends and data insights to identify root causes and organizational risks, recommend prevention strategies, and inform business decisions and priorities.
Identify opportunities to streamline workflows and responsibly apply technology, automation, and AI to improve efficiency, service quality, and the employee and leader experience.
Partner across the organization to monitor emerging employment and labour relations requirements, support compliance with employment standards, human rights, accessibility, occupational health and safety obligations, and implement improvements that address workplace risks.

You belong here
We strive to be much more than a great place to work. Here, you join a collective of incredibly vibrant, purpose driven, and open-minded people. Every day, Westland proves that building a great business means taking care of communities, clients, and each other with equal commitment. You will be supported and respected for who you are and for the voice you add to the conversation.

At Westland, you will feel the power of community. Westland Insurance Ltd. is an inclusive organization that values diversity in its workforce.
