Mechanical Designer

Location: Edmonton, Alberta

Industry: Building Consulting Engineering

About The Opportunity

An established building consulting engineering firm in Edmonton is looking to add a Mechanical Designer to its growing team. This is an opportunity for a technically minded designer who enjoys developing practical building-system solutions and wants to take greater ownership of mechanical design assignments.

Working alongside a multidisciplinary team of engineers, designers, and project professionals, you'll contribute to projects across commercial, institutional, residential, and healthcare sectors. You'll have the opportunity to develop your design capabilities, gain exposure to different project types, and see your work progress from initial concepts through construction.

This role is ideal for someone who has a solid foundation in mechanical building design and is ready to become more involved in technical decisions, project coordination, and day-to-day design delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop mechanical designs for HVAC, heating, cooling, ventilation, and plumbing systems in commercial and institutional buildings.
  • Prepare mechanical layouts, equipment selections, schedules, details, and construction drawing packages.
  • Perform design calculations and assist with equipment sizing and system selection.
  • Produce and update mechanical drawings using Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Coordinate mechanical layouts with architectural, structural, electrical, and other building systems.
  • Identify potential design conflicts and work with the project team to develop practical solutions.
  • Apply relevant building codes, standards, and design guidelines throughout the design process.
  • Incorporate project requirements, client feedback, and engineering markups into design deliverables.
  • Support construction-phase activities, including shop drawing reviews, responding to technical inquiries, and assisting with site reviews.
  • Manage assigned design tasks and deadlines while maintaining drawing accuracy and project quality.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience in mechanical building design, ideally within a consulting engineering environment.
  • Practical knowledge of HVAC and plumbing systems.
  • Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Familiarity with building codes, mechanical standards, and construction documentation.
  • Ability to interpret drawings and coordinate mechanical systems across disciplines.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and organizational skills.
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to manage assigned work with increasing independence.
  • Relevant mechanical engineering or engineering technology education, or equivalent industry experience.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

  • Hands-on design responsibility: Take ownership of your assigned systems and contribute directly to project deliverables.
  • Variety of projects: Expand your experience across different building types and mechanical applications.
  • Technical development: Strengthen your skills in system selection, calculations, coordination, and construction documentation.
  • Collaborative project teams: Work alongside experienced professionals and learn through day-to-day project involvement.
  • Room to progress: Build the technical independence and project experience needed to move into more senior design responsibilities over time.

This opportunity is well suited to a designer who enjoys the technical side of building engineering and wants to continue developing their expertise while contributing to meaningful projects.
