Original job description

Company Description

At Taproot Community Support Services, we’re a 100 percent employee-owned organization through an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). Every employee is an owner from their first day, with a voice in shaping Taproot’s future and the opportunity to share in employee ownership dividends.

As a Certified B Corporation, we harness business for good. Since 1983 we’ve grown steadily, now delivering support across Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario through more than 90 contracts.

Our 900-plus employee-owners live by five shared values: we are stronger together, we lead with optimism, we embrace challenges, we respect every voice, and we go above and beyond. Guided by these principles, we deliver more than 125 community-based services each year. We walk alongside about 1,600 children, youth, families, and people with diverse abilities, with revenues exceeding $70 million.

Our Support Office provides the systems, data and services that help our programs do their best work. As we grow, we are looking for a Director of Information Technology to lead our technology strategy, information systems and IT operations.

Role Description

Help shape how technology powers a growing, employee-owned organization. As our Director of Information Technology, you’ll report to the Chief Operating Officer and work alongside senior leaders across three provinces to make our technology secure, connected and easy to use. You’ll lead the work that matters most: bringing case management onto one system, connecting our systems and data, building reporting leaders can rely on, strengthening SharePoint and digital records, and helping Taproot adopt AI thoughtfully and responsibly. You’ll lead a team of system administrators and a data analyst, partner with external IT providers, and see your work make a real difference for our staff and the people we serve.

Schedule:

One (1) permanent, full-time position available, working 40 hours per week:

Hours, e.g. 0830-1630 Monday through Friday

Some travel is required.

In your Role You WIll

Manage/oversee a number of areas that include:

Strategy & Team Leadership

Develop and deliver an IT and digital strategy that aligns with organizational goals, and develop and manage the IT budget, including yearly licence and cloud cost reviews.

Lead and develop the IT team, including system administrators and a data analyst: setting clear priorities, assigning work, coaching, and supporting performance and growth.

Lead several cross-functional projects at once using structured project management, and lead change management with HR, Quality and programs to support successful adoption.

Systems, Data & AI

Oversee core systems, including Microsoft 365/SharePoint, ShareVision, Inclusion and iTacit, and lead system implementation, integration and data migration.

Lead SharePoint structure, permissions and governance, and support digital records management.

Oversee organizational reporting and dashboards in Microsoft Fabric and Power BI, and set up data governance.

Optimize systems and workflows to reduce manual work, using automation and AI where it adds value, and lead the responsible adoption of AI, including Microsoft Copilot.

Infrastructure, Security & Support

Oversee the helpdesk and ticketing system, set and monitor service level agreements (SLAs), and report IT metrics to management.

Manage security and IT software, including endpoint detection and response (EDR) and antivirus, as well as backup, disaster recovery and business continuity planning.

Oversee IT hardware and asset management (laptops, desktops, cellphones and printers), including purchasing, tracking and lifecycle management.

Establish IT policies that safeguard our data and meet legal, privacy and accreditation requirements.

Vendors & Relationships

Manage IT and telecommunications vendors, and keep a central record of contracts, renewal dates and costs.

Represent Taproot at meetings and build positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as required.

A complete and detailed list of key responsibilities can be available at time of interview.

*** Before confirming employment, all applicants must provide a copy of a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter. These checks vary by province and sector, and the Program Hiring Team will communicate them.

As an Ideal Candidate You Possess

A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field.

Minimum of 5 years of experience in IT management or a similar role, with a track record of leading successful projects, including a large system implementation or digital transformation.

Strong experience with Microsoft 365 and Azure, including SharePoint Online, and with system integration and data migration.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Fabric and Power BI, and a solid understanding of data governance.

Hands-on experience rolling out generative AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot.

Strong knowledge of cyber security, risk management and compliance.

Excellent team leadership, project management and change management skills, with the ability to explain technology in plain language.

Project management certification, change management training, and experience in community social services or health care are assets.

Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract.
