The Program

Taproot Community Support Services operates several community living programs in the town of Bonnyville to support people with developmental disabilities in becoming active, empowered and involved in their community regardless of the challenges they face - developmental disabilities, acquired brain injury, FASD, autism, and dual diagnosis. Our passion is to improve all aspects of a person`s life by focusing on the individuals and their progress. We encourage daily independence and self-sufficiency together with community inclusion.

The Position

The Disability Services Worker (DSW), under supervision of their supervisor, facilitates and monitors education and development programs for purposes of providing individuals in service with physical, behavioural, emotional and social supports/supervision in residence and in the community. DSWs develop relationships and act as a liaison with the community, family members, guardians and employers. This position reports to the Team Leader.

Scheduling

One (1) permanent, full-time position that will work 42 hours per week:

2000-0800, 12 hour overnight shift
Rotating schedule: 2 shifts on, 3 shifts off, 2 shifts on, 2 shifts off, 3 shifts on, 2 shifts off

In Your Role You Will

Support individuals with household chores, life skills, personal hygiene (if needed).
Provide supports as per the individual's care plan
Provide immediate support in crisis situations and use de-escalation techniques to deal with behaviours
Administer medication, first aid if/when necessary.
Use computer program to write objective daily reports and document notes & observations regarding the client
A complete and detailed list of key responsibilities can be available at time of interview
Prior to confirmation of employment, all applicants must provide a copy of a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter. These checks vary depending on province and sector and will be communicated by the Program Hiring Team.

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess

Candidate must be physically able to participate in recreation activities such as swimming, walking, basketball, etc. to support persons-served desire to be physically active
Minimum Grade 12 or Diploma/Degree in Disabilities Studies, Social Work, Human Services, Special Education, Recreation or equivalent
MANDATORY - One (1) year experience working with persons with developmental disabilities.
MANDATORY - A valid Class 5 Driver License with acceptable driving abstract and reliable vehicle
A positive attitude and belief that persons with disabilities have the right / responsibility to define and pursue their life choices, and pursue active participation and involvement in the community.
Skills in assisting individuals in anger management, daily living, self-help, etc.

ALSO Helpful, But Will Train If Needed

First Aid/CPR Certification
Crisis Prevention Intervention, Medication Administration, Abuse Protocol, Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies, Foundations and Disabilities Training
Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety, as appropriate.

Responsibilities

Support people with developmental disabilities in residential and community settings by assisting with household tasks, life skills, personal hygiene, and activities that promote independence and community participation. Follow individual care plans, respond to crises using de-escalation techniques, administer medication and first aid when needed, document observations, and liaise with families, guardians, employers, and community members.

Requirements

Applicants must have at least one year of experience supporting people with developmental disabilities, a valid Class 5 driver's license with an acceptable driving abstract, and access to a reliable vehicle. A minimum of Grade 12 or a relevant diploma or degree is required, along with the ability to participate in physical recreation activities and a positive, person-centered approach; several relevant certifications and training courses are helpful but can be provided.
