The Program

Taproot Community Support Services Community Disability Services team in Westlock encourages persons with developmental disabilities build on their strengths, further develop life skills, overcome barriers and actively participate in their community, especially music events, church as well as recreation activities such as swimming (requiring direct staff support).

The Position

The Disability Services Worker (DSW), under supervision of their supervisor, facilitates and monitors education and development programs for purposes of providing individuals in service with physical, behavioural, emotional and social supports/supervision in residence and in the community. DSWs develop relationships and act as a liaison with the community, family members, guardians and employers. This position reports to the Team Leader.

Scheduling

One (1) temporary, full-time position with an average weekly schedule of 42 hours:

1830-0800
Includes 8 hours of sleep per night, paid at the Alberta sleep rate
Duration of this position is dependent on incumbent and is estimated at 9 months.

Bona Fide Occupational Requirement: This is a gender-specific position based upon the behaviour and needs of the persons served.

Allergy Alert- Person's served are not pet owner but do enjoy visiting pets.

In Your Role You Will

Support individuals with household chores, life skills, personal hygiene (if needed).
Provide supports as per the individual's care plan
Provide immediate support in crisis situations and use de-escalation techniques to deal with behaviours
Administer medication, first aid if/when necessary.
Use computer program to write objective daily reports and document notes & observations regarding the client
A complete and detailed list of key responsibilities can be available at time of interview.
Prior to confirmation of employment, all applicants must provide a copy of a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter. These checks vary depending on province and sector and will be communicated by the Program Hiring Team.

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess

Must be physically fit to assist with lifts and transfers and able to support with personal hygiene and dressing.
Must be self motivated and physically capable of supporting individuals in achieving social and recreational goals, including promoting community inclusion through activities such as bingo, bowling, swimming, attending church, and other physical or social events.
Need to be able to communicate to non verbal individuals.
Previous experience working with developmental disability or mental illness
MUST HAVE - Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License; reliable vehicle, clean driver’s abstract and adequate insurance
A positive attitude and belief that persons with disabilities have the right / responsibility to define and pursue their life choices, and pursue active participation and involvement in the community.
Skills in assisting individuals in anger management, daily living, self-help, etc.

ALSO Helpful, But Will Train If Needed

First Aid/CPR Certification
Crisis Prevention Intervention, Medication Administration, Abuse Protocol, Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies, Foundations and Disabilities Training
Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety, as appropriate.
