If you get genuine satisfaction from a clean month-end, get a little irritated by messy reconciliations, and actually enjoy explaining what the numbers are telling us, you might be our kind of person.
Targett’s is a growing building supplies business with deep local roots and a reputation for doing what we say we’re going to do. We’re looking for a hands-on Controller who wants ownership of the numbers and the opportunity to have a real impact on the business.
This role is a good fit for someone who:
- Has owned the month-end close from start to finish
- Understands how good financial information supports better operational decisions
- Likes creating structure, improving processes, and leaving things better than they found them
- Is comfortable working directly with leadership and explaining the numbers in a practical way
What You’ll Be Responsible ForFinancial Reporting & Month-End Close
You’ll be responsible for making sure our financial information is accurate, timely, and useful.
- Own the full month-end close, including journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly financial statements
- Provide variance analysis and explain what is driving the results
- Maintain clean, accurate, and well-supported financial records
- Make sure leadership has the financial information needed to make good decisions
Budgeting, Forecasting & Insight
We want someone who can look beyond what happened last month and help us understand what’s coming next.
- Lead the annual budgeting process
- Build and maintain forecasts based on actual business drivers
- Translate financial results into clear, practical information for leadership
- Lead financial scorecard conversations and help department leaders understand how their results impact the overall business
Controls, Compliance & Risk
As we grow, strong processes and controls become even more important.
- Develop and maintain strong internal controls
- Ensure compliance with HST, payroll, WCB, and applicable accounting standards
- Prepare year-end working papers and work directly with our external accountants
- Identify areas where our financial processes can be improved
Business Partnership
This position is part of our senior leadership team. We want someone who understands the accounting but can also see the bigger picture.
- Work closely with senior leadership on financial and operational decisions
- Monitor and improve key metrics including cash flow, DSO, and DPO
- Help identify financial risks and opportunities
- Bring forward information and recommendations that help us make better decisions
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for an accountant who holds a CPA designation or is actively working toward one.
Ideally, you have at least five years of progressive accounting experience, including experience in a Controller role. We’re also open to a strong Senior Accountant or Assistant Controller who has the experience and ability to take the next step.
More important than the title you currently hold is your ability to take ownership of the accounting function, produce reliable financial information, and communicate it clearly to people who may not be accountants.
