Department Overview
The Risk Technology team within the Finance and Risk Platform group supports non-external-facing credit risk applications used for the Bank’s regulatory capital calculations and reporting to the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI). The team provides System Development Lifecycle (SDLC) services, including business analysis, solution design, development, testing, deployment, and production support. Team members collaborate with business and technology partners to deliver reliable, cost-effective solutions in a timely manner.
Job Description
The Risk Technology team is seeking a junior Software Engineer with foundational .NET, Python, and SQL skills. Working with guidance from senior team members, the successful candidate will contribute to understanding requirements and system designs, developing and testing application components, resolving issues, and supporting the delivery of end-to-end solutions. The role offers opportunities to build technical knowledge while contributing to secure, reliable, and maintainable applications.
The primary accountabilities for this position are:
- Follow TD technology delivery practices, coding standards, security requirements, and project management disciplines.
- Contribute to application development activities across the SDLC under the guidance of senior team members.
- Review and clarify business requirements, technical designs, and acceptance criteria.
- Develop, enhance, and maintain application components using approved technologies and patterns.
- Write readable, maintainable, and testable code that meets established quality standards.
- Create and execute unit tests, address defects, participate in peer code reviews, and support testing and deployment activities.
- Monitor assigned work, communicate risks or blockers promptly, and complete deliverables within agreed timelines.
- Investigate and resolve routine technical issues, escalating more complex issues when appropriate.
- Apply secure coding practices to help prevent common application vulnerabilities.
- Maintain technical documentation and contribute ideas that improve development, testing, and team efficiency.
- Collaborate effectively with team leads, developers, quality engineers, analysts, and other stakeholders.
Job Requirements
- Undergraduate degree, college diploma, relevant technical certificate, or equivalent practical experience.
- Up to two years of relevant software development experience, including internships, co-op placements, academic projects, or personal projects.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn new technologies, tools, and business processes.
- Foundational understanding of software development concepts, coding practices, testing, and the SDLC.
- Ability to analyze routine issues, seek guidance when needed, and apply feedback to improve solutions.
- Commitment to delivering high-quality work and continuously developing technical skills.
- Working knowledge of one or more relevant programming languages, development tools, databases, or operating environments.
- Foundational experience with .NET 8 or later, Python, or a comparable object-oriented programming language
- Basic knowledge of unit testing frameworks such as NUnit, xUnit, or MSTest
- Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases, preferably Microsoft SQL Server
- Familiarity with web technologies such as JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS
- Awareness of REST APIs, web services, and common data formats such as JSON and XML
- Basic experience with Git version control and collaborative development workflows
- Exposure to CI/CD concepts or GitHub Actions workflows is an asset
- Exposure to cloud services, business intelligence tools such as SSRS or SSIS, or UML modelling is an asset
- Familiarity with GitHub Copilot or comparable AI-assisted development tools is an asset; use must comply with TD AI and information security standards
- Effective time and task management skills, with the ability to organize assigned work and meet agreed timelines.
- Ability to troubleshoot routine software issues using available documentation, tools, and guidance from experienced team members.
- Customer-focused and professional approach, with the ability to work respectfully with business and technology partners.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly, ask questions, take ownership of assigned tasks, and respond constructively to feedback.
- Self-motivated and collaborative team player who can work independently on well-defined tasks and seek support when needed.
