Job Description:
Department Overview
The Risk Technology team within the Finance and Risk Platform group is a dynamic, high-performing, and fast-paced team supporting enterprise credit risk applications used for the Bank’s regulatory capital calculations and reporting to the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI). The team provides high-quality, timely SDLC services, including business analysis, solution design, development, quality engineering, and production support. Risk Technology works closely with TD business partners to deliver secure, reliable, cost-effective solutions in accordance with enterprise and regulatory standards.
Job Description
The Risk Technology team is seeking a junior Software Engineer with 2–3 years of relevant experience to contribute to both application development and quality engineering. The successful candidate will design, build, test, and maintain application components and automated test assets; analyze requirements and technical designs; support database/ETL and web application changes; integrate code and tests into continuous delivery pipelines; and provide timely, data-driven feedback in a collaborative enterprise environment.
The primary accountabilities for this position are:
- Contribute to requirement analysis, technical design, development planning, test planning, test-case design, and traceability across the SDLC.
- Review business requirements, solution designs, and architecture to define development tasks, test scope, scenarios, dependencies, and end-to-end validation coverage.
- Design, develop, unit test, debug, and maintain application components, APIs, database objects, ETL processes, and supporting technical documentation under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Design, build, execute, and maintain manual and automated functional tests for web applications, APIs, databases, and ETL processes.
- Develop, debug, and maintain reusable application code, automation scripts, test utilities, and quality engineering assets using approved frameworks and engineering standards.
- Perform code reviews, unit testing, integration testing, defect analysis, remediation, and regression testing to support reliable delivery.
- Integrate application builds and automated tests into CI/CD and continuous testing pipelines, and provide rapid feedback through engineering and quality dashboards.
- Manage source code, test suites, execution evidence, requirement traceability, defect logging, retesting, and defect-resolution support.
- Support functional and non-functional testing, including performance, reliability/operational readiness, accessibility, and security testing, with guidance from senior team members.
- Plan and manage development and test environments and test data, including automated data provisioning and service virtualization where dependencies are unavailable.
- Apply BDD/TDD practices and approved AI-assisted engineering and testing capabilities for code and test generation, risk-based prioritization, triage, root-cause insights, and maintenance; validate AI outputs for accuracy, security, explainability, and bias.
- Collaborate with business partners, developers, quality engineers, and platform teams to deliver milestones on time and to quality, budget, regulatory, and technology standards.
- Document and communicate technical decisions, test results, risks, dependencies, and lessons learned; escalate high-risk issues early and contribute to continuous improvement.
Experience and Education
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Two to three years of relevant software development, quality engineering, or combined software engineering experience.
- Solid understanding of programming, software design, database concepts, and software testing fundamentals, with practical experience applying them in day-to-day delivery.
- Experience working in cross-functional enterprise environments with multiple teams, systems, and dependencies.
- Clear written and verbal communication, analytical problem-solving, attention to detail, and the ability to learn with guidance.
Must Have
- Hands-on experience developing, debugging, unit testing, and maintaining application code in at least one programming language or modern application framework.
- Hands-on experience with functional testing and test automation, including design, execution, maintenance, and debugging of automated tests.
- Experience with web application development or support, web UI testing, and at least one automation framework such as Selenium, Cypress, or Playwright.
- Good working knowledge of SQL, including database development or support and database/ETL testing.
- Experience developing or testing REST APIs using tools or libraries such as Postman or REST Assured.
- Understanding of source control, code review, build and release practices, CI/CD integration, continuous testing, defect management, test data planning, and environment planning.
- Working knowledge of object-oriented programming, secure coding practices, BDD/TDD, and approved AI-assisted development and testing capabilities with appropriate governance and validation of outputs.
- Ability to collaborate across business, development, quality engineering, and platform teams and communicate implementation status, test results, risks, dependencies, and defects clearly.
Preferred Tool Exposure
- Development: Java, C#, .NET, JavaScript/TypeScript, or Python; REST APIs; SQL; and common web application frameworks.
- Test management and defect tracking: Jira, Azure DevOps, TestRail, qTest, or Xray.
- Automation and API testing: Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, Postman, or REST Assured.
- Performance testing: JMeter or k6.
- DevOps and source control: Git, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or Azure Pipelines.
- Service virtualization, test data management, monitoring platforms, code quality tools, and approved AI development and testing assistants.
Nice to Have
- Exposure to accessibility, security, performance, reliability, or operational readiness engineering and testing.
- Experience with enterprise DevOps practices and reusable development or quality engineering asset creation.
