We are currently hiring a Open Liberty / WebSphere Liberty Lead Application Modernization Architect for our global consulting client.
Role: Open Liberty / WebSphere Liberty Lead Application Modernization Architect
Rate Range: $71 -73/hr C2C (40 hrs /week)
Duration: 12 months
Location: Hybrid, 2-3 days in office, downtown Toronto, ON, Canada
Role Overview
Job Description: Lead Application Modernization Architect responsible for designing and modernizing enterprise applications using Open Liberty and WebSphere Liberty, driving migration initiatives from traditional WebSphere Application Server (WAS) environments to cloud-native architectures.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and architect enterprise applications using Open Liberty and WebSphere Liberty.
- Lead application modernization and migration programs from traditional WebSphere Application Server (WAS) to Open Liberty.
- Develop cloud-native microservices using Java, Spring Boot, Jakarta EE, and Open Liberty.
- Define application architecture, deployment strategies, and integration patterns.
- Implement CI/CD pipelines and DevOps best practices.
- Design scalable, secure, and highly available solutions across cloud environments.
- Collaborate with business, development, infrastructure, and security teams to deliver enterprise solutions.
- Conduct architecture reviews and provide technical leadership to development teams.
- Troubleshoot application performance bottlenecks and optimize runtime environments.
- Develop architecture documentation, technical standards, governance frameworks, and best practices.
- Guide modernization initiatives and cloud transformation strategies.

- Strong experience as an Application Architect, Solution Architect, or Modernization Architect.
- Deep expertise with:
- Open Liberty
- WebSphere Liberty
- IBM WebSphere Application Server (WAS)
- Proven experience leading large-scale application modernization and migration initiatives.
- Strong hands-on experience with:
- Java
- Advanced Java Concepts
- Spring Boot
- Jakarta EE
- RESTful Web Services
- Experience designing and implementing microservices architectures.
- Strong knowledge of cloud-native application development principles.
- Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
- Expertise in application integration patterns and API-driven architectures.
- Strong understanding of security, scalability, and high availability design principles.
- Experience providing technical leadership and architecture governance.
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration platforms.
- Experience supporting cloud migration and modernization programs.
- Knowledge of enterprise architecture frameworks and governance models.
- Experience working within highly regulated enterprise environments.
- Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation practices.
- Experience with performance tuning, capacity planning, and application resiliency strategies.
