Original job description
Our client, a leader in advanced power and energy metering products, is seeking a Component Engineer to join their engineering team.
This role serves as the technical bridge between R&D, supply chain, and manufacturing, taking ownership of component risk to identify, test, and release alternate electronic components and ensure manufacturing lines run uninterrupted.
What You’ll Do
- Identify viable drop-in replacements and functional crosses for at-risk electronic parts and connectors
- Review schematics and datasheets to accurately assess how candidate components perform within existing applications
- Define and execute bench tests using oscilloscopes, power supplies, and multimeters to validate alternate parts
- Partner with procurement to determine the best resolution for shortages, including managing Engineering Change Orders (ECOs)
- Process approved parts through the Product Data Management (PDM) system and manage documentation handoffs
- Flag potential regulatory and safety certification impacts early and escalate complex engineering issues when required
- Maintain part-risk tracking and provide clear, timely updates to product owners, supply chain, and procurement
What You Bring
- Degree or Diploma in Electrical or Electronics Engineering
- 3 to 5+ years of hands-on hardware design, sustaining, or component engineering experience
- Strong ability to read schematics and evaluate component behavior in-circuit
- Deep understanding of common electronic components (op-amps, regulators, passives, memory, protection devices, magnetics)
- Hands-on lab proficiency for building test setups and debugging circuits
- Excellent engineering judgment regarding specification risk vs. functionality
- Strong organization and self-direction with the ability to track multiple parts through approval stages
Nice-to-Have
- Experience with component obsolescence (EOL), second-sourcing, and formal ECO processes
- Background in power electronics, mixed-signal design, or utility metering
- Familiarity with safety certifications (UL, CSA) and compliance impact
- Experience using Cadence (or similar EDA tools) and PDM/PLM systems
- Experience collaborating directly with procurement, supply chain, or Contract Manufacturers (CMs)
