Location: Burnaby, BC

Work Arrangement: Hybrid – Remote and onsite

Contract Duration: 12 months, with potential extension

Hours: Approximately 20 hours per week minimum (hours may vary based on project needs)

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Quality Assurance (QA) Analyst with strong expertise in Power BI, SQL, data validation, and analytics testing.

The successful candidate will help establish and improve QA processes for Power BI dashboards, reports, data models, and other analytics solutions.

This role is ideal for someone who has experience testing BI reporting solutions, validating data accuracy, identifying data quality issues, and implementing structured QA processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute test plans, test cases, and regression testing for Power BI reports and dashboards.
  • Perform functional, regression, and end-to-end data testing.
  • Validate data accuracy across SQL Server databases, ETL pipelines, semantic models, and Power BI reports.
  • Establish QA standards, testing templates, release checklists, and quality gates.
  • Identify, document, and track defects using Azure DevOps, Jira, or similar tools.
  • Work with developers to troubleshoot issues, validate fixes, and support production releases.
  • Review business requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria to ensure they are complete and testable.
  • Validate Power BI measures, calculations, KPIs, and business rules.
  • Assess how changes to data models impact existing reports and dashboards.
  • Develop reusable test scripts and regression testing processes.
  • Identify opportunities to improve data quality, testing efficiency, and reporting accuracy.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong experience in QA testing for Power BI reports, dashboards, and data analytics solutions.
  • Strong SQL skills, including querying and validating data.
  • Experience testing data across SQL Server, ETL pipelines, semantic models, and Power BI.
  • Understanding of data modelling, including relationships, measures, and semantic models.
  • Experience with functional, regression, and end-to-end data testing.
  • Knowledge of DAX for validating Power BI calculations and measures.
  • Strong understanding of star and snowflake schemas.
  • Experience with data profiling, data quality assessment, and identifying inconsistencies.
  • Experience using Azure DevOps, Jira, or similar defect-tracking tools.
  • Ability to create test plans, test cases, QA documentation, and reusable validation scripts.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with business and technical teams.

Nice to Have

  • Microsoft Fabric
  • Power Query (M)
  • Experience with test automation and reusable SQL validation scripts.
  • Experience establishing QA standards or processes for a new QA function.
  • Experience supporting operational, regulatory, or compliance reporting.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who combines strong data testing and SQL skills with hands-on Power BI QA experience.

The ideal candidate understands how data flows from source systems through ETL pipelines and semantic models into Power BI dashboards.

You should be comfortable validating complex data, identifying reporting discrepancies, working with developers to resolve defects, and establishing consistent QA processes.

Important: This is not a traditional application or manual software testing role. The primary focus is data quality, Power BI testing, SQL validation, and establishing QA standards for business intelligence reporting.
