IT Project Manager Senior

The Smart Cities team is looking to engage a Senior Project Manager within the Information Technology, Emerging Technologies team. Our team works in the Wave Technology Centre, at the intersection of technology, strategy, experimentation, and public service. Our team compliments traditional IT operations by helping IT and business units explore, evaluate/test and understand new and emerging technologies (eg. XR, digital fabrication, next gen broadcasting, robotics, quantum) in a practical, responsible and evidence-based way.
We do this through strategic foresight, experimentation and hands-on learning and evaluation with the intention of turning new possibilities into informed decisions and scalable opportunities - ultimately helping the organization modernize and improve services for Calgarians.
We are looking for people who are energized by uncertainty, enjoy learning through experimentation, and are comfortable helping shape programs, processes and recommendations where no established roadmap yet exists.
Responsibilities include supporting emerging technology experimentation requests from City staff/teams through intake and lifecycle - from intake triage and requirements gathering to hand off and support to other Project Managers and client communications.
Tangible deliverables include prioritized intake assessments, tracking of documented requirements, schedules, risk and issue logs, client status updates, and successfully coordinated pilots aligned with the Innovation Through Procurement Challenge framework.
Skills
Essential Skills
- Eight (8) years' IT project management experience (the majority of this experience should have been practiced in accordance with the generally recognized good practices identified in PMIs PMBOK® Guide, in recent years).
Desired Skills
- Of this experience, at least five (5) of the years should have been on medium to large technology projects, as defined by both size and complexity (size of projects may be defined in terms of budget, staff involvement, organizational impact, risk profile, complexity/number of stakeholders, and size of organization).
- Five (5) years' experience leading and supporting multidisciplinary project teams consisting of internal staff from IT and clients, contractors, and vendors.
- Five (5) years' experience with project resource planning, including participation in project team resourcing.
- Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to build and manage complex relationships with groups/individuals with varying perspectives, interest and roles.
- Strong leadership, planning, change management and analytic skills.
- Well-developed communication skills including oral, written, presentation, facilitation and mediation skills (negotiation and mediation).
- Ability to work with a diverse audience and reach a consensus on critical project decisions.
- The ability to undertake multiple projects, manage competing demand s, prioritize and adjust resources.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to influence others without direct supervisory control.
- Previous work experience in the public sector or large organizations; and
- Formal training and /or certification in project management (e.g., PMI Project Management Professional) is an asset.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of Calgary, AB.
Pay And Benefits
The pay range for this position is $80.00 - $100.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
