These markets include aerospace and defense, factory automation, air and water quality environmental monitoring, electronics design and development, oceanographic research, deepwater oil and gas exploration and production, medical imaging and pharmaceutical research.
We are looking for individuals who thrive on making an impact and want the excitement of being on a team that wins.
Job Description
Help build the optical systems behind the testing and characterization of high-performance semiconductor inspection cameras. As an Optical System Design Specialist, you’ll turn optical concepts into practical, production-ready solutions that combine illumination, imaging, mechanics, electronics, and software.
If you enjoy moving between optical modeling and hands-on lab work, this role offers the opportunity to own solutions from early experiments through manufacturing deployment.
What you’ll do
- Design LED and laser illumination systems for automated camera test stations.
- Model optical performance and conduct ray-trace, tolerance, and performance analyses.
- Build prototypes and evaluate uniformity, throughput, contrast, and image quality.
- Select commercial optics and specify custom components when needed.
- Develop alignment, calibration, test, and validation procedures.
- Troubleshoot optical and optomechanical performance issues.
- Partner with camera, sensor, mechanical, electrical, software, and manufacturing engineers.
- Support designs from prototype through production deployment.
What you need
- Required: Strong knowledge of imaging, illumination, ray/wave optics, radiometry, photometry, tolerancing, and alignment.
- Required: 5+ years designing optical systems for imaging, photonics, instrumentation, or industrial applications.
- Required: Hands-on optical laboratory, measurement, alignment, and troubleshooting skills.
- Required: Experience with optical design and analysis tools such as Zemax OpticStudio, Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW.
- Required: Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, Applied Physics, or related engineering field.
- Advantage: Semiconductor inspection, machine vision, scientific imaging, or camera characterization experience.
- Advantage: Familiarity with image sensors, optomechanical/CAD design, or EMVA standards.
- Advantage: Master’s or higher degree in a relevant discipline.
What we offer
- Meaningful work on advanced imaging technology.
- Deep, hands-on engineering challenges.
- Collaboration across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Opportunities to grow technical depth from optical design through production.
- The stability and engineering breadth of Teledyne Technologies.
What happens next
After you apply, we’ll review your experience for alignment with the role. Selected candidates may move through a recruiter screen and technical/team interviews. Timelines vary by position.
Teledyne is an equal opportunity employer.
Salary Range:
$76,800.00-$102,400.000The anticipated salary range listed for this role is only an estimate. Actual compensation for successful candidates is carefully determined based on several factors including, but not limited to, location, local regulations (such as minimum wage), education/training, work experience, key skills, and type of position.
Teledyne and all of our employees are committed to conducting business with the highest ethical standards. We require all employees to comply with all applicable laws, regulations, rules and regulatory orders. Our reputation for honesty, integrity and high ethics is as important to us as our reputation for making innovative sensing solutions.
