Position Summary
We are currently seeking an Intermediate/Senior Project Engineer – Hydropower and Water Resources to join our Power team. This is a new vacant position for which we are actively recruiting. This is a technical leadership role focused on coordinating multidisciplinary engineering activities and supporting the delivery of complex hydropower, dam, and water infrastructure projects across Canada and the United States.
The Project Engineer will work closely with Project Managers, discipline leads, technical specialists, clients, contractors, suppliers, and regulatory stakeholders to align engineering work with project goals. The successful candidate will help establish engineering priorities, coordinate interfaces, lead key technical deliverables and design reviews, manage engineering quality processes, and drive technical issues toward resolution from early development and design through construction.
This role is well suited to an intermediate engineer ready to grow into greater technical coordination responsibility, or a senior engineer prepared to take a leading role in design management and multidisciplinary project delivery.
Essential Job Functions
- Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities for hydropower, dam, and water resources projects from planning and feasibility through detailed design, procurement, and construction.
- Lead the development of key engineering deliverables, including design basis documents, design reports, engineering schedules, deliverable registers, risk assessments, and project-wide technical documentation.
- Establish engineering priorities, deliverable schedules, required inputs, interdisciplinary interfaces, review periods, and issue dates in coordination with Project Managers and discipline leads.
- Plan and lead multidisciplinary design reviews, constructability reviews, technical workshops, and risk assessments, and drive comments and technical issues through resolution.
- Guide project engineering quality processes, including interdisciplinary reviews, checking and approval workflows, design verification, engineering change management, and controlled document issuance.
- Identify and manage interfaces between engineering disciplines, suppliers, contractors, regulatory requirements, environmental requirements, and other project stakeholders.
- Serve as a key technical interface with clients, including leading engineering coordination meetings, presenting design progress, communicating technical issues and risks, and resolving client comments.
- Oversee engineering document control processes, including revision management, review workflows, document status tracking, and controlled issuance of engineering deliverables.
- Coordinate with Project Managers and discipline leads to identify resource, schedule, scope, budget, and technical priority concerns.
- Lead engineering coordination for supply and construction tender packages, including drawings, specifications, scopes of work, technical requirements, bidder clarifications, technical evaluations, and procurement support.
- Guide engineering activities during construction, including RFIs, contractor submittals, field changes, non-conformances, design clarifications, and resolution of construction issues while maintaining design intent.
- Perform or contribute to technical design and analysis within the candidate’s area of expertise, where appropriate.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the development of effective multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Work safely and report all health and safety concerns.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, Structural, Geotechnical, or another engineering discipline relevant to hydropower development.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada or eligible for registration.
- Approximately 7+ years of progressive engineering experience, with flexibility for candidates whose experience demonstrates the required level of responsibility.
- Engineering experience related to hydropower, renewable energy, dams, hydraulic structures, waterways, water resources, or other complex infrastructure projects.
- Experience working through multiple stages of project development, such as feasibility, regulatory/permitting support, concept design, detailed design, procurement, and construction.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering deliverables, schedules, interfaces, design reviews, technical documentation, and issue resolution.
- Experience preparing or coordinating design basis documents, design reports, engineering calculations, technical specifications, regulatory submission documents, tender packages, and construction support documentation.
- Experience with engineering and/or construction quality management processes, including design reviews, checking and approval workflows, document control, and engineering change management.
- Experience with construction tendering and procurement support, including technical tender packages, bidder clarifications, technical evaluations, and supplier or contractor coordination.
- Experience working directly with owners, clients, contractors, equipment suppliers, regulatory consultants, and other external stakeholders.
- Strong understanding of engineering design processes, engineering document control procedures, and multidisciplinary interface management.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with clients, technical teams, and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate numerous technical interfaces, actions, inputs, and deliverables concurrently.
- Demonstrated initiative, accountability, sound engineering judgment, and ability to independently drive technical issues toward resolution.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding of engineering disciplines outside the candidate’s primary technical background.
- Knowledge of applicable Canadian engineering codes and standards relevant to hydropower, dams, water infrastructure, and hydro-mechanical systems is considered an asset.
- Willingness and ability to travel periodically to project sites across North America.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit or stand as required and remain in a stationary position for at least 50% of the workday.
