Position Description
Currently, Tetranex is seeking a Full-time
Senior Piping Stress Engineer to join our team as an employee or contractor, supporting a variety of oil and gas projects, including well pads and industrial facilities.
The successful candidate will be responsible for performing and reviewing piping and pipeline stress analyses, developing piping support requirements and providing technical solutions to complex piping design challenges. Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, this individual will contribute throughout the engineering lifecycle, from initial design and analysis through detailed engineering and construction support.
Responsibilities
- Perform and review piping and pipeline stress analyses for critical systems using CAESAR II, evaluating applicable sustained, thermal, occasional, hydrotest, and dynamic loading conditions to ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and project requirements.
- Identify stress-critical lines and establish stress analysis systems based on P&IDs, line lists, and project design documentation.
- Evaluate piping system flexibility and response to operating conditions, including thermal expansion, pressure changes, equipment movement, and external forces.
- Prepare, review, and document engineering calculations, stress analysis reports, load reports, and supporting technical documentation in accordance with corporate quality standards.
- Establish piping support requirements for critical and non-critical lines, including the design and evaluation of specialized pipe supports and support arrangements.
- Perform local stress and finite element analyses using tools such as NozzlePRO to evaluate equipment connections, tank and vessel nozzles, and other areas subject to localized loading.
- Assess and specify spring hangers, expansion joints, rigid elements, and other specialized piping components as required.
- Coordinate piping support loads and equipment load information with civil/structural and mechanical engineering teams, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of information issued for design.
- Review piping layouts, isometrics, equipment drawings, vendor documentation, and stress analysis input data to identify potential design issues and develop practical, cost-effective solutions in coordination with piping design and other engineering disciplines.
- Prepare technical specifications, data sheets, material requisitions, and technical bid evaluations for spring supports, expansion joints, and other specialty piping items as required.
- Participate in design reviews and collaborate with project managers, discipline leads, designers, and clients to resolve technical issues and ensure designs meet project requirements.
- Provide piping stress engineering support throughout the project lifecycle, including troubleshooting field issues during fabrication, construction, and commissioning and recommending appropriate design modifications.
- Contribute to project planning, engineering hour estimates, scheduling, and progress reporting to support project budgets and delivery timelines.
- Review engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client specifications.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and other team members, supporting knowledge sharing and the development of internal piping stress engineering capabilities.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Current Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with APEGA in Alberta.
- Minimum 15 years of relevant experience in piping stress analysis and piping/pipeline engineering, preferably within the oil and gas industry.
- Strong hands-on experience using CAESAR II for piping and pipeline stress analysis, including the ability to independently develop, assess, and review stress models and calculation reports.
- Knowledge of applicable piping codes, standards, and regulatory requirements, including ASME B31.3, CSA Z662, and relevant ABSA requirements, as applicable to the project scope.
- Demonstrated experience evaluating piping loads, designing pipe supports, and establishing support requirements for critical and non-critical piping systems.
- Experience evaluating equipment nozzle loads and localized piping stresses. Familiarity with NozzlePRO or other finite element analysis software is considered an asset.
- Strong understanding of piping system flexibility, thermal expansion, sustained and occasional loading, spring supports, expansion joints, and pressure safety valve reaction forces.
- Experience coordinating piping loads and engineering deliverables with civil/structural, mechanical, process, and other project disciplines.
- Experience with oil sands facilities, SAGD projects, well pads, pipelines, gas plants, or similar industrial facilities is considered an asset.
- Experience supporting EPC/EPCM projects across multiple phases, from conceptual engineering through detailed design and project execution.
- Previous experience providing technical guidance or mentoring junior engineers is considered an asset.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail and commitment to engineering quality.
- Experience in a technical leadership or lead role is considered an asset.
