Original job description
Role Summary
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director, Supply Chain owns Byng's end-to-end supply chain: procurement, inventory management, warehousing, production support, logistics and fleet and facilities management. The Director is accountable for the planning, forecasting and fulfilment needed to get the right materials to the right job site, on time and at the right cost.
The mandate is to build a scalable supply chain that supports Byng's growth across North America. That means driving continuous improvement across every supply chain function to reduce cost, minimize waste, raise workforce utilization and expand capacity, while designing processes that can be replicated in new markets.
As a member of the Operations Leadership team, the Director partners with field operations, project management, finance and technology. Over time, the role may also take on oversight of Byng's Trade Pool, which is closely tied to inventory through client projects.
Key responsibilities
Supply chain leadership
- Set the supply chain strategy and roadmap in line with Byng's operating plan and growth targets.
- Implement best-practice frameworks across procurement, inventory, warehouse integrity and production.
- Own the supply chain, procurement and production budgets; allocate resources to meet service and financial goals.
- Define, track and report supply chain KPIs to the COO, including purchase order status, material movement, receiving and inventory accuracy.
- Lead cross-functional design of new processes and systems, built for scalability into new markets.
- Oversee compliance with company policy, contracts and regulations across all supply chain functions.
- Lead, mentor and develop the supply chain team; set clear objectives, give regular feedback and conduct performance reviews.
- Build a collaborative, inclusive culture that invites team input on problems and improvements.
Procurement
- Lead procurement strategy for the materials, fixtures and finishes required for renovation projects.
- Identify, qualify and onboard suppliers; negotiate contracts, pricing, rebate and discount programs, and payment terms.
- Partner with project and field teams to understand requirements and build procurement plans.
- Oversee the purchase order process end to end, from requisition to receipt and invoice match.
- Monitor market trends, pricing and supplier performance to drive cost savings and quality improvements.
Warehouse management and integrity
- Oversee safe, efficient and organized operation of all company warehouses.
- Manage receiving, put-away, picking, kitting and dispatch to support daily field operations.
- Maintain bin location integrity and track material movement within each warehouse.
- Conduct regular warehouse walks (weekly at the primary site) to review standards, flow and housekeeping.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety standards, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Ontario) and equivalent rules in other jurisdictions.
Inventory management
- Build and implement the inventory planning strategy, including demand forecasting tied to client project pipelines.
- Set min/max levels and replenishment rules that balance availability, holding cost and turnover.
- Manage all inventory categories: active, obsolete, incorrect, damaged and returned. Lead a monthly obsolete and slow-moving stock review.
- Optimize where inventory is held, balancing central hubs against regional spokes and direct-to-site shipping.
- Run cycle counts and periodic audits; report inventory levels, accuracy and valuation.
Logistics and fleet management
- Oversee material movement between vendors, warehouses and renovation sites to meet project schedules.
- Optimize routes, modes and carriers to reduce cost while protecting delivery commitments.
- Manage the fleet program: acquisition and leasing, budget, vehicle allocation, loading standards and maintenance.
- Oversee the full lifecycle of company-owned and leased commercial and passenger vehicles.
- Ensure timely inspections, maintenance and record keeping, including regulatory requirements for commercial vehicles.
- Set fleet targets, monitor performance and costs, and resolve bottlenecks.
Qualifications and Experience
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Operations, Business or a related field.
- 10+ years of progressive supply chain experience, including 5+ years leading multi-function teams.
- Experience in construction, renovation, building materials, field services or a similar project-driven environment.
- Proven record of reducing cost and improving service across procurement, inventory and logistics.
- Hands-on experience managing warehouse operations and a commercial vehicle fleet.
- Strong command of ERP and inventory systems (for example, NetSuite), and advanced Excel.
- Valid driver's licence and ability to travel regularly to warehouses, offices and job sites.
Preferred
- Professional designation such as SCMP (Supply Chain Canada), CPIM or CSCP (ASCM).
- Experience scaling supply chain operations across multiple regions or through acquisitions.
- Experience in a private equity-backed or high-growth company.
- Knowledge of Canadian and U.S. commercial vehicle and workplace safety regulations.
Core competencies
- Strategic and systems thinking: connects supply chain decisions to project delivery, margin and growth.
- Analytical and data-driven: uses forecasts, KPIs and cost data to make and defend decisions.
- Operational excellence: applies lean and continuous improvement methods to remove waste.
- Negotiation and supplier management: secures value while building durable vendor partnerships.
- People leadership: builds accountable, engaged teams across office, warehouse and drivers.
