Position Summary
The Senior Data Analyst applies specialized knowledge and skills to support CoRE’s system-level research and evaluation projects through data management, analysis, visualization, and reporting. This includes data extraction, linkage, cleaning, transformation, validation, and preparation of datasets for research and evaluation activities. The role analyzes and visualizes data to identify trends, patterns, performance measurements, and outcomes across the mental health and addiction system, helping to inform evidence-based decision-making.
The Senior Data Analyst uses data management tools, statistical techniques, and business intelligence platforms to prepare datasets, generate insights, and develop dashboards, visualizations, and reports for a variety of audiences. The role presents and explains findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including leadership, and works collaboratively with project teams to integrate data requirements, reporting, and analytical activities into project plans and timelines.
Responsibilities:
1. Data Analytics and Visualization
- Plan and complete various analytics using data generated from both secondary and primary data sources across the mental health and addiction system (e.g., descriptive statistics, sampling, power analysis, randomization, regression modelling, psychometrics).
- Manage data processing activities for research and evaluation projects, including data extraction, integration, linkage, transformation, cleaning, and preparation for statistical analysis.
- Collaborate with research, evaluation, and operational teams to understand information needs, prepare analytical datasets, and support project deliverables.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including health informatics and research partners, to facilitate data access, reporting, and information-sharing activities.
- Design, develop, and maintain dashboards, data visualizations, and reporting products that communicate findings and key performance indicators to diverse audiences.
- Create charts, graphics, and visual reporting materials for reports, presentations, and knowledge translation products.
2. Data Practice and Governance
- Establish and maintain data quality processes to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of research and evaluation data.
- Follow and promote privacy, confidentiality, and security protocols/procedures in clinical and non-clinical settings.
- Identify gaps and opportunities to improve data sources, data quality, reporting processes, and data management practices, and provide recommendations for enhancement
- Provide inputs to the identification of opportunities to upgrade supported statistical and analytical models.
- Provide guidance and training to project teams to enhance their understanding of how various statistics and analytics can shape project objectives and outcomes.
- Maintain research and evaluation datasets, documentation, and participant electronic records in accordance with data governance, privacy, and security requirements.
3. Research and Evaluation Support
- Support research and evaluation projects by providing data expertise throughout project design, data collection planning, and analytical plan development.
- Prepare, manage, and document datasets, scripts, technical notes, decision logs, and references.
- Contribute to manuscript drafting.
- Contribute to evaluation planning, performance measurement, information synthesis, and report development.
4. Project Coordination and Delivery Support
- Coordinate and oversee data entry and document management activities to ensure quality and accuracy.
- Identifying changes to project plans and raising awareness to research leads to confirming and approving action from research leads.
- Monitor project activities to ensure compliance with privacy, confidentiality, and security requirements.
- Contribute to communication of research findings in clear language adjusted to the audience with guidance
- Support grant proposal, ethics submission, report, and manuscript preparation with guidance from research leads.
5. CoRE Priorities Advancement
- Respond to ad-hoc requests for data, reporting, and information requests from internal and external stakeholders.
- Stay current on data management, reporting, visualization, and research best practices.
- Participate in organizational initiatives, professional development, and other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Master’s degree in related fields (e.g., biostatistics/statistics, data science, computer science, engineering, computational psychology or related quantitative fields) with at least three years of full-time quantitative analyses experience (ideally in a health setting).
- A combination of experience and education may be considered as an equivalency on a one-for-one basis.
- Experience in data analytics, visualization and relational databases.
- Experience working with large, complex, and/or administrative datasets
- Minimum 2 years of hand-on experience with analytical models using data visualization tools such as Power BI (preferred) or Tableau.
- At least two years’ experience working with large data databases (e.g., SQL, Oracle, Snowflake).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- In-depth knowledge and acumen in various quantitative and statistical methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of program evaluation analysis methods (e.g., difference-in-differences, propensity score matching, regression, censored data, longitudinal analysis, predictive modeling).
- Proficient in data processing skills including data extraction, transformation, linkage, and cleaning.
- Proficient with the use of programming languages such as Python or SQL.
- Proficient with common statistical tools such as R or SAS
- Ability to identify stakeholder and project requirements and translate them into meaningful data products and insights.
- Advanced computer skills including MS Office.
- Data assurance skills to identify gaps or errors in data prior to analyses.
- Effective communication skills to translate complex analyses and analytics processes to lay terms.
- Creative ability to create visualizations and summaries of complex data and results for diverse stakeholders.
- Commitment to the principles of robust and valid research analyses and related data integrity and management in line with required privacy and security legislation.
- Ability to shift priorities as demands or directions change.
- Ability to exercise judgment and creative problem-solving when evaluating complex situations with multi-faceted criteria.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize assignments, meet deadlines, maintain accurate records, and ensure quality.
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills, with the ability to build relationships, share expertise, and coordinate with stakeholders to achieve project objectives.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply project management skills.
- Understands and can work within given constraints such as technology, policy, regulatory, financial, legal, ethical, social, user constraints.
- Ability to synthesize data from multiple sources to inform the development of new products and analytics or revisions to the existing suite.
Preferred:
- Familiarity with Alberta administrative data sets (e.g. DAD, NACRS, Practitioner Claims, JOIN, ORCA etc.) and social service systems is a strong asset.
- Experience with health or social services data (e.g. inpatient, emergency, pharmacy, mental health, pharmacoepidemiology).
- Experience in qualitative and mixed method analysis.
