Position: Board of Directors, Volunteer Position

Term Length: 3 years

About Us

The Canadian Training Institute (CTI) is a national voluntary organization committed to supporting safer and healthier communities. Our mission is to contribute to the development of knowledge, skills, and services that reduce social conflict and promote active participation in building healthy individuals, agencies, workplaces, and communities. We are passionate about helping those who help others.

Overview

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic individual to join our Board of Directors. The Board will support the work of CTI by providing mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by CTI’s Executive Director (ED), the Board-ED relationship is a partnership. The Board’s involvement is both critical and expected to ensure CTI’s success.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership, Governance, and Oversight

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director in implementing CTI’s strategic plan.
  • Review outcomes and metrics developed by CTI to evaluate its impact, regularly measuring performance and effectiveness.
  • Review agendas and supporting materials before Board and committee meetings.
  • Approve CTI’s annual budget, audit reports, and significant business decisions.
  • Assist the Executive Director and Board Chair in identifying and recruiting new Board members.
  • Partner with the Executive Director and other Board members to ensure the implementation of Board resolutions.
  • Serve on committees and take on special assignments as needed.
  • Represent CTI to stakeholders and act as an ambassador for the organization.
  • Oversee the financial health of the organization, ensuring financial resources are managed responsibly and align with CTI’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Provide leadership in financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Review and approve financial statements, ensuring they accurately reflect the organization’s financial position.
  • Advise the Board on financial strategies, investment decisions, and long-term financial planning.
  • Collaborate with the external auditor to ensure compliance with all applicable financial regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and staff to streamline financial processes and align them with best practices.
  • Actively participate in Board meetings, providing insights and recommendations.

Board Terms/Participation

CTI’s Board members meet 6 times per year, and meetings can be both virtual and in-person. Board members are expected to make every effort to attend all meetings, will serve a three-year term and are eligible for reappointment for one additional term.

Qualifications

This is a unique opportunity for an individual who is passionate about CTI’s mission and has a proven record of board leadership.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments in one or more of the following areas: business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector.
  • Diplomatic skills with an ability to build relationships, facilitate discussions, and foster consensus among diverse individuals.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a deep passion for improving the lives of CTI’s beneficiaries.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse group of Board members and staff.
  • A commitment to CTI’s mission and a dedication to upholding the highest standards of ethical governance.

Desired Qualities:

  • A strategic thinker with a results-oriented approach.
  • Proven experience in finance, accounting, or a related field, with a solid understanding of financial management and nonprofit finance (experience in the nonprofit sector is a plus).
  • Strong leadership skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Prior experience serving on a nonprofit Board is preferred but not required.

Benefits of Serving on the Board

  • Work alongside a diverse group of passionate and talented Board members and staff.
