Original job description

Dedicated exclusively to children and their families, The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is one of the largest and most respected paediatric healthcare centres in the world. As innovators in child health, we lead and partner to improve the health of children through the integration of healthcare, leading-edge research and education. Our reputation would not have been built - nor could it be maintained - without the skills, knowledge and experience of the extraordinary people who come to work here every day. SickKids is committed to ongoing learning and development, and features a caring and supportive work environment that combines exceptionally high standards of practice.

When you join SickKids, you become part of our community. We share a commitment and determination to fulfill our vision of Healthier Children. A Better World.

Don't miss out on the opportunity to work alongside the world's best in paediatric healthcare.

We are looking for a highly motivated Data Analyst to join our team in the Child Health Evaluative Sciences (CHES) program at the Research Institute of The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. Under the supervision of Drs. Peter Gill and Sanjay Mahant (Scientists, SickKids Research Institute and Department of Paediatrics), the Data Analyst will become a core member of an outcomes-based research group that aims to generate evidence focused on the care of hospitalized children. In particular, the successful candidate will work with the newly developed GEMINI-Paediatrics data platform, using routinely generated clinical and administrative data from hospital information systems.

GEMINI (www.geminimedicine.ca) is a unique Canadian big-data platform that uses advanced methods and analytics to extract and standardize data captured in hospital electronic health records. GEMINI currently operates at more than 30 Ontario hospitals and supports the Ontario General Medicine Quality Improvement Network (GeMQIN), a provincial network led by Ontario Health to improve care for general medicine patients in hospital. GEMINI is a collaborative data and analytics platform for Ontario hospitals that accelerates research and quality improvement to support excellent hospital care. GEMINI has recently expanded to develop GEMINI-Paediatrics, co-led by Drs. Mahant and Gill, which will include all paediatric inpatient visits across more than 30 Ontario hospitals, including all specialty children's hospitals.

The Data Analyst's main responsibilities are to design rigorous approaches to examining data, apply analytical techniques to healthcare data, and translate findings into meaningful, applied knowledge for researchers and other collaborators. This includes designing studies, creating statistical analysis plans, conducting and interpreting analyses, and reporting findings in an applied manner. The role also involves taking rigorous approaches to data quality by developing and applying validation frameworks to identify, investigate, document, and resolve data issues in collaboration with clinical and technical partners.

This is a full-time role (1.0 FTE, 35 hours per week), beginning with a one-year contract. The candidate will work within a dynamic team of paediatric clinician-researchers, data analysts and scientists, clinicians, and quality improvement specialists focused on the care of hospitalized children. They will work with the Canadian Paediatric Inpatient Research Network (PIRN; https://www.pirncanada.com/), a national network focused on generating evidence for children hospitalized in general paediatric settings. To learn more about the research conducted by this team, visit the lab website (https://lab.research.sickkids.ca/mahant-gill/) and the PIRN ongoing projects page (https://www.pirncanada.com/ongoing-projects).

Here's What You'll Get To Do

Data analysis and statistical modelling

  • Conduct data analyses using statistical models and/or machine learning methods.
  • Apply common statistical modelling approaches to address project objectives using R and/or Python libraries, such as linear and logistic regression, survival analysis, risk adjustment, Markov chain methods, GLMs, GAMs, and GEEs.
  • Understand the interpretation of different statistical models and select the appropriate model for the intended research question.
  • Analyze and interpret project results, draw conclusions, and contribute findings to reports, manuscripts, abstracts, grants, and presentations for different audiences.
  • Prepare visualizations and dashboards' including graphs, tables, and figures' to communicate findings and outputs.
  • Clearly document all model details, code, and iterations using appropriate comments and version control tools such as Git.

Data exploration, preparation, and visualization

  • Ensure adequate quality control by setting standards, monitoring results, and implementing appropriate data cleaning, consistency checks, and other quality-control measures before analysis.
  • Maintain data documentation and the physical and logical organization of scripts, records, and master archive lists.
  • Perform descriptive and inferential analyses in R and/or Python, and prepare HTML, PDF, and Microsoft Word reports summarizing the results.
  • Validate output tables, listings, and figures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of analyses.
  • Pre-process raw data for analysis, including cleaning, transforming, and integrating data from multiple sources and assessing overall data quality.
  • Produce high-quality ad hoc and standardized reports tailored to different end users (e.g., clinicians, senior management, and hospital executives) using R and/or Python procedures.
  • Develop efficient programs, algorithms, or systems to reduce programming time for standardized data analyses and reports.
  • Contribute to Agile sprints for the development of internal GEMINI R package

Inter-institutional partnership development

  • Establish, strengthen, and maintain partnerships between the research teams leading GEMINI-Paediatrics at SickKids and Unity Health Toronto.
  • Facilitate clear and consistent communication across teams through regular engagement, including team meetings, updates via Slack and Microsoft Teams, and research roundtables.
  • Collaborate with other GEMINI data analysts and related team members to develop multidisciplinary analytic approaches suited to project objectives and to support best practices and process development.
  • Work closely with researchers across both teams to establish coding techniques, structure study datasets, and develop sound analytical plans.
  • Document and communicate errors in data and code to senior staff.

Here's What You'll Need

  • An MSc or PhD in mathematics, statistics, biostatistics, computer science, or a related discipline, with at least one year of professional data science experience; or an equivalent combination of at least two years of work experience and specialized training.
  • Expert-level programming skills in SQL, R, and/or Python.
  • Ability to import and merge data from disparate sources, perform data quality checks, manage missing data, and prepare data for statistical models with minimal supervision.
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience with inferential statistics and statistical analysis methods using large administrative and clinical datasets.
  • Experience maintaining and developing inter-institutional collaborations and partnerships is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in and/or work experience related to paediatric health research is an asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment and actions in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion objectives.

Employment Type
