Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon - Paediatric Burns

The Hospital for Sick Children

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Description

The Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and the University of Toronto are inviting applications for a permanent full-time faculty position for an Academic Surgeon with a focus on paediatric burns. The effective date of this appointment is August/September 2027.

The successful applicant will work within the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and participate in the care of paediatric burn patients, in addition to providing general care to the paediatric plastic surgery patient population. Advanced training in burn care, including burn intensive care, is required.

The successful candidate will contribute to the comprehensive care of paediatric burn patients across the continuum of care, including acute burn assessment and resuscitation, operative burn wound management and reconstruction, inpatient and outpatient burn care, scar management, and long-term reconstruction. The candidate will participate actively in the Burn Program's multidisciplinary clinical activities, quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, and morbidity and mortality review. They will also contribute to the continued development of evidence-based burn protocols and clinical pathways and support the Program's academic and scholarly activities.

The successful candidate should possess research skills through advanced training and have a publication track record. Preference will be given to applicants with formal training or a strong interest in quality improvement and patient safety to build on the Burn Program's existing quality improvement infrastructure and support the ongoing maintenance of American Burn Association (ABA) verification standards. The Paediatric Burn Program at the Hospital for Sick Children is verified by the ABA.

The candidate is expected to participate in medical student, resident, and fellow education at the University of Toronto. The candidate's application should demonstrate excellence in research and teaching.

The candidate must be eligible for appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor at the University of Toronto and will participate in the educational programs and academic mission of the University of Toronto Division of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery as a full-time member. The candidate must be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to leverage multidisciplinary, clinical, and basic science facilities available on the Hospital campus, including the 21-storey world-renowned Research Institute and the University of Toronto's Department of Surgery.

Candidates must be able to function proficiently in English and hold an M.D. or equivalent degree. Demonstrated academic excellence in basic or clinical research is required. Depending on qualifications, candidates will be eligible for an appointment as a Surgeon-Scientist or Surgeon-Investigator.

Commensurate with qualifications and experience, base remuneration will be in the range of $350,000 to $550,000 CAD per year for 35 hours of work per week, plus on-call responsibilities, to which an equal distribution of billing overages will be added.

Our Commitment to Diversity

The children and families we care for are diverse, and so are our employees. All are welcome to join our unique organizational culture and be part of our inclusive team.

The University of Toronto and SickKids are strongly committed to diversity within their communities and especially welcome applications from racialized persons, persons of colour, women, Indigenous/Aboriginal People of North America, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ persons, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.

SickKids, located at 555 University Avenue in downtown Toronto, is among the largest children's hospitals in North America and has a long history of excellence in clinical care, research, and education. It was named the number one paediatric hospital in the world in 2025 and 2026 by Newsweek magazine. SickKids is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and is located adjacent to the University campus and numerous specialty hospitals and biomedical research institutes. It is an exciting time at SickKids as we execute our campus redevelopment project, including a new state-of-the-art acute care hospital tower.

Toronto is a vibrant and multicultural city, widely recognized as one of the world's most diverse urban centres, with more than half of its residents born outside Canada and more than 250 ethnicities represented across the region. This diversity is reflected in the city's neighbourhoods, food scene, and strengths in sectors such as life sciences, finance, information, and communications technology. Toronto and the surrounding region are also home to a growing MICHELIN-recognized dining scene, with 17 Ontario restaurants awarded MICHELIN Stars in the 2025 guide. Toronto is Canada's largest city and the fourth-largest city in North America. It is a safe, livable city with excellent housing, schools, and university access. The city is internationally recognized for its quality of life, cultural attractions, and access to year-round recreation. World-famous lakes and wilderness country are easily accessible, as are two hub airports for regional or international travel.
