Original job description
Our client is an energy technology company based in Calgary, developing automation and operational software trusted by industry leaders across North America to manage complex industrial operations. As their client base and deployment roadmap expand, they are hiring an Intermediate Software Developer to build core platform features, configure custom site implementations, and help scale software that interfaces directly with physical industrial systems.
This is a hands-on role for a developer who takes pride in code craftsmanship and enjoys solving real-world, high-consequence problems. Working on-site in downtown Calgary with occasional client facility visits, you will deliver a steady stream of new site deployments, platform enhancements, and integrations that connect field instrumentation to cloud workflows.
What You’ll Do
Software Engineering and Platform Development
- Build, enhance, and maintain core application features using Python.
- Configure and customize software workflows, operational controls, and calculation modules for specific industrial client deployments.
- Write clean, well-tested, maintainable code supported by unit and integration tests, code reviews, and structured documentation.
- Modernize and optimize application performance, reliability, and database interactions across PostgreSQL and MS SQL Server environments.
Industrial Systems Integration and IoT
- Build and maintain integrations that read from and control physical infrastructure.
- Work with industrial automation protocols, device communication layers, and cloud data pipelines.
- Collaborate on the development of operational automation tools and connected IoT workflows.
Deployment, Client Solutions, and Operational Support
- Actively contribute to technical architecture discussions and practical implementation planning.
- Serve as a technical resource during rollouts, troubleshooting field and application issues with precision and urgency.
- Conduct site visits across client operations to support physical installations, system testing, and operational handoffs.
- Participate in a shared on-call rotation to provide occasional off-hours technical escalation support for live operations.
Cross-Platform and Data Growth
- Integrate local control systems with enterprise cloud platforms that aggregate shipment data, inventory, and logistics reporting.
- Collaborate across the development lifecycle using Git, Linux, Windows, and Azure DevOps environments.
What You'll Bring
- 3+ years of professional software development experience with Python.
- Practical working knowledge of relational databases, including PostgreSQL and MS SQL Server.
- Experience with Git, Linux environments, and core development workflows including unit testing, integration testing, and CI/CD practices.
- Pragmatic problem-solving ability with high attention to detail and strong debugging skills.
- Clear communication skills with the confidence to interface directly with clients in both office and field environments.
- Willingness and ability to travel locally/regionally for on-site commissioning and support.
- Valid Canadian Class 5 driver's license with at least 3 years of consecutive Canadian auto insurance history (required for operational site visits).
This is an opportunity to join an established industrial software company where your code bridges enterprise software and physical infrastructure, directly impacting critical operations across North America every day.
