Job Description
JOB PURPOSE:
The Chaplain provides Christian-based pastoral care services within Harbour Light keeping with approved pastoral care practices.
Characteristic Job Duties
- Prays with and or leads people to faith in Jesus Christ as opportunity permits.
- Provides spiritual counsel/guidance to Harbour Light clients, staff and community members.
- Assists, advises, refers, corrects or guides addiction Treatment Program clients in supportive recovery.
- Conducts interviews related to addiction treatment and other program participants, as required.
- Attends meetings, assists with and participates in specific assigned administrative duties.
- Participates in scheduled Spirituality Classes to clients as part of Treatment Program.
- Participates in morning Spiritual reflections.
- Assists clients towards achieving personal and spiritual well-being.
- Works as a team member of the Chaplaincy team and other community agencies.
- Maintains written records and logs of activity reports and statistical information (SAMIS).
- In conjunction with the Director of Chaplaincy, recruits, interviews, trains, orientates, documents, and monitors all chaplaincy volunteers.
- Liaises with representatives of other faith communities as needed.
- Is knowledgeable about and acts in accordance with security procedures of the organization to ensure safety and confidentiality of information.
- Organizes physical décor and set-up of chapel and other pastoral care areas.
- Serves on The Salvation Army councils and committees as required.
- As assigned attend and participate in staff meetings and case management meetings for shelter, CRF, treatment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education Level Attained
The successful job applicant will have completed up to two (2) years of Community College.
Special Licenses, Diplomas, Certifications Or Requirements
The successful applicant will hold/have:
- Knowledge of substance addictions, practical knowledge of life skills, ability to provide spiritual guidance and support, an (spiritual/emotional) understanding of the human heart and a desire to learn on the job essential. Practical experience is a valuable asset.
- Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or equivalent
- Current Certification in First Aid/CPR
- Current Driver’s license in British Columbia
- Computer literate in Microsoft Windows and Office
- Criminal Record Check
Minimum Prior Related Experience
The incumbent must have the following experience before hire:
- One year of prior related experience in chaplaincy or a related field dealing with death, dying and incarceration.
Physical Effort/Dexterity Required
The performance of the job requires a moderate amount of standing, walking, assisting clients in wheel chairs/walkers, intervening in physical confrontations, and some data input.
The incumbent is required to lift up to 10 pounds.
Concentration Required
The performance of the job requires attentive listening, analyzing, and providing guidance.
Responsibility For Financial Resources
The incumbent’s responsibility for Financial Resources:
- The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters regularly, or on a relief basis, or has responsibility for the wise use of his/her own resources. He/She may be authorized to spend, disburse, or collect small amounts of cash. The incumbent has very little input into the annual budget.
Responsibility For Human Resources
The incumbent’s responsibility for Human Resources:
- The incumbent is responsible as a group/work leader. He/She is responsible for providing direction and checking results, but generally works along with those supervised.
Work Environment
The incumbent’s work environment is typically in an office environment, Correctional Institutions, long-term care facilities, hospitals, private homes, churches, and funeral homes.
The Incumbent Will Work Under The Following Disagreeable Conditions
- Dealing with Mental Health issues
- Warm inside temperatures
- Odour
- Isolation
- Crisis Situations
The incumbent may have little to no travel required (local travel to and from different facilities).
The incumbent works on call as required.
Exposure To Hazards
The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to:
- Physical attacks by others (violent clients)
- Exposure to infectious diseases
- Exposure to bodily fluids
- Other potentially dangerous situations
Precautionary Measures
The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):
- Universal Precautions
- Non-violent crisis intervention training
- Mental Health First Aid
- Hand wash with anti-bacterial soap
- Aware of client issues
Hours Of Work
Temp PT, from October 2026 to May 2027. Monday, Wednesday & Saturday (7.5 paid hours each day, 22.5 paid hours each week), flexible hours of work will be required when necessary.
ANNUAL SALARY: 54,873.00 - 68,601.00 with a maximum of 82,329.00
Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $28.14 to $35.18 with a maximum of $42.22.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
