At UBC, we believe that attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce is key to the successful pursuit of excellence in research, innovation, and learning for all faculty, staff and students. Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.

Job Summary

Situated within the Faculty of Medicine, the Division of Continuing Professional Development (UBC CPD) supports physicians and other health professionals across BC with education, courses, and learning opportunities to support practice improvement, patient care and health care delivery. The Program Manager is responsible for developing innovative education programs and leading complex projects in the Strategic Projects and Partnerships portfolio in collaboration with provincial and national partner organizations. The Program Manager may be assigned to one or more projects depending on the needs of the Division.

Key competencies of the role include relationship building and effective communications with partners and interest holders, planning and overseeing new program design to ensure it addresses learning needs of health care practitioners, developing funding proposals, reports, and contracts, developing and actioning work plans, leading committees and working groups, overseeing project operations including program finances and budgets, planning human resources and optimizing team performance, and leading research and evaluation activities within assigned projects.

The position provides functional and project oversight to designated UBC CPD staff and works collaboratively with UBC CPD Medical Directors, Medical Leads, Project Sponsors, and other partners or interest holders. More broadly the Program Manager is expected to participate in wider activities within the Division such as strategic planning, staff training and development, and furthering the Division’s mission and vision.

Organizational Status

The incumbent reports to the Senior Manager, Strategic Projects and Partnerships, UBC CPD. UBC CPD is a cost-recovery unit within the Faculty of Medicine serving varied target audiences of practicing health professionals and has close relationships with key provincial organizations. The incumbent works in a fast-paced environment with a wide variety of partners (i.e., provincial-level professional associations, regulatory colleges, health organizations, and Ministry of Health committees), consultants and subject matter experts who develop and deliver curriculum. The incumbent works collaboratively with leadership and senior staff at UBC CPD as well as a variety of community, provincial, national, and international partners (i.e., health administrators, agency leads, university faculty, leaders and other health professionals in practice) depending on assigned projects.

The incumbent oversees a team of program staff and has the latitude to delegate responsibilities and tasks as necessary to meet the goals and objectives of UBC CPD’s educational initiatives.

Consequences of Error/Judgement

The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that program deliverables are completed within scope, on time and on budget. The position must exercise considerable judgment and initiative in decision making, including resolving issues not clearly covered by established guidelines.
