Position Overview

Our Client is a long established Toronto-based family office. Supporting financial, investment, philanthropic and personal interests, the office exercises responsibility over a complex group of corporations, partnerships, trusts, investment entities and a private foundation, together with real estate and other family-owned assets throughout North America.

As the office continues to evolve and expand, they are seeking a VP, Finance and Treasury to take a leadership role within its finance function. Reporting to the CEO this role will provide leadership across financial reporting, tax planning and compliance, treasury, financial operations and risk management. As a trusted advisor, this individual will translate complex financial matters into clear recommendations that support wealth preservation, tax efficiency and long-term family objectives. The role will also oversee the finance team, coordinate external professional advisors and strengthen financial systems, controls and reporting.

The ideal candidate is an experienced CPA with substantial tax expertise and a background supporting high-net-worth families or complex private investment structures. They will combine strategic financial judgment with the ability to oversee detailed financial and tax matters, build trusted relationships and operate with exceptional discretion. This is an attractive opportunity to influence the financial stewardship of a diverse family office while supporting investment activities, intergenerational planning and philanthropic priorities.

Role Responsibilities

  • Provide financial leadership across the family office and its affiliated entities, advising on financial strategy, tax, business decisions and risk.
  • Oversee accounting and financial reporting for corporations, partnerships, trusts, investment entities and the private foundation, ensuring accurate and timely financial statements, management reports and coordination of external audits and reviews.
  • Direct budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis, developing reporting and dashboards that provide clear insight into financial performance, commitments and future funding requirements.
  • Lead tax planning across personal, corporate, trust, foundation and investment structures, working with external advisors to implement tax-efficient strategies and oversee Canadian and U.S. tax returns, information reporting and regulatory filings.
  • Support estate and succession planning, including intergenerational wealth transfer, in collaboration with family members, legal counsel and tax advisors.
  • Manage treasury, cash flow and liquidity across entities, overseeing banking and custodian relationships, financing arrangements and capital requirements to support investments, operations, properties and family expenditures.
  • Coordinate financial reporting for investment portfolios and private investments, reviewing performance, capital calls, distributions and liquidity needs with investment managers and external advisors.
  • Provide financial oversight of real estate holdings, private residences and other family-owned assets, and contribute financial analysis and due diligence for acquisitions, dispositions, financing transactions and major expenditures.
  • Oversee cross-border financial operations and related payroll, tax and compliance obligations for Canadian and U.S. activities, coordinating the work of advisors and service providers across jurisdictions.
  • Strengthen governance, accounting policies and internal controls; assess financial, operational, tax and regulatory risks; coordinate insurance reviews; and safeguard confidential family information.
  • Lead, mentor and develop the finance team, establishing clear expectations and promoting accountability, collaboration, responsiveness and service excellence.
  • Manage relationships with external accounting, tax, legal, banking, investment and other professional advisors, ensuring coordinated support and clear, actionable advice for family members and leadership.
  • Improve financial systems, reporting tools and processes through technology, automation and standardized practices that enhance efficiency, reporting quality and control.

Desired Qualifications

  • CPA (or equivalent) with a university degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or a related discipline and at least 10 years of progressive finance, accounting and tax experience, including significant leadership responsibility.
  • Experience within a family office, private investment office, asset management firm, public accounting firm, private equity environment or complex private enterprise.
  • Significant experience supporting high-net-worth families and overseeing complex structures involving corporations, partnerships, trusts, foundations and investment entities.
  • Strong Canadian and U.S. tax expertise relevant to individuals, corporations, trusts, estates and charitable organizations, with experience coordinating cross-border financial and tax matters.
  • Demonstrated expertise in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, treasury management and internal controls across multiple entities.
  • Understanding of investment management, private markets, real estate and wealth management structures, including their financial reporting and liquidity requirements.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop finance teams and coordinate external professional advisors and service providers.
  • Strong commercial judgment, strategic thinking and analytical skills, with the ability to assess complex issues and develop practical recommendations.
  • Excellent communication and relationship management skills, including the ability to explain financial and tax matters clearly and build trust with family members, senior leadership and advisors.
  • Exceptional discretion, integrity and professionalism, together with a responsive service orientation and the ability to manage competing priorities in a highly confidential environment.
  • Completion of CPA Canada’s In-Depth Tax Program, Advanced Tax Program or an equivalent tax specialization; an MBA, CFA, CBV, TEP or other relevant designation would be an asset.

Please note that at present, legal eligibility to work in Canada is a prerequisite for this role.
