Join Our Underground Mining Team
Thyssen Mining is seeking experienced and safety-focused Development Miners to join our underground operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing underground development activities including drilling, blasting, scaling, ground support installation, mucking, and underground construction while maintaining the highest standards of safety and productivity.
This position is ideal for experienced underground miners with strong conventional development skills who thrive in challenging underground environments and are committed to safe, efficient, and quality work.
Key Responsibilities
Underground Development Operations
- Perform underground development work in headings, drifts, ramps, crosscuts, and other mine openings.
- Drill development rounds using jackleg, stoper, or other underground drilling equipment as qualified.
- Perform face drilling according to mine plans, layouts, and specifications.
- Load and handle explosives and blasting accessories where certified and authorized.
- Assist with or perform blasting activities in accordance with site procedures and regulations.
- Scale loose ground and identify potential ground control hazards.
- Install ground support systems including screen, split sets, rebar, rock bolts, cable bolts, and other support as required.
- Muck blasted material and assist with preparing headings for the next development cycle.
- Install and maintain underground services including ventilation, air and water lines, drainage systems, and other services as required.
- Perform underground construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance activities.
- Operate underground mobile equipment and mining equipment as trained and authorized.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all company, client, and regulatory safety requirements.
- Participate in daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
- Inspect headings and work areas for ground conditions and other hazards before commencing work.
- Complete workplace and equipment inspections as required.
- Report hazards, incidents, unsafe conditions, and equipment deficiencies immediately.
- Maintain safe and organized underground work areas and housekeeping standards.
Equipment & Maintenance
- Complete pre-operational inspections on underground mining equipment.
- Operate and maintain hand tools, drills, and mining equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting as required.
- Identify and report mechanical or operational issues that may affect safety or productivity.
Teamwork
- Work closely with supervisors, miners, equipment operators, bolters, construction crews, and other underground personnel.
- Coordinate development activities to support safe and efficient advancement of underground headings.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced underground workers when required.
- Contribute to a respectful, safety-focused, and productive work environment.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of underground mining experience.
- Demonstrated experience performing underground development mining activities.
- Experience with conventional drilling, preferably including jackleg and/or stoper drilling.
- Strong understanding of underground development cycles, including drilling, blasting, scaling, ground support, and mucking.
- Experience installing underground ground support systems.
- Knowledge of underground mining safety practices and regulations.
- Ability to read and follow mine layouts, development plans, and work instructions.
- Ability to work safely in physically demanding underground conditions.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Common Core modules (Ontario) or equivalent underground mining certification.
- Blasting experience and explosives handling certification.
- Extensive jackleg and/or stoper drilling experience.
- Experience operating underground mobile equipment such as scooptrams/LHDs.
- Experience installing underground services and performing mine construction.
- Experience working for underground mining contractors.
- First Aid Certification.
- WHMIS and other site-specific safety training.
