Build Your Future Underground with Thyssen Mining
Thyssen Mining is seeking experienced Welders to support an underground borehole casing project in Ontario. Working as part of the casing installation crew, the Welder will prepare, fit, and weld 6-inch Schedule 120 carbon-steel casing and spool connections for primary paste boreholes while ensuring compliance with project specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Fit, align, and weld carbon-steel casing sections and spool flanges.
- Perform complete-joint-penetration (CJP) butt welds in accordance with approved welding procedures, ASME B31.3, and CWB standards.
- Prepare pipe ends through cutting, grinding, beveling, cleaning, and fit-up activities.
- Read and interpret fabrication drawings, welding symbols, specifications, and weld maps.
- Inspect completed welds, identify defects, and perform repairs as required.
- Maintain welding records, consumable tracking, and quality documentation.
- Operate and maintain welding equipment, grinders, ventilation systems, and fire-prevention tools.
- Support casing installation, material handling, rigging coordination, and site housekeeping.
- Adhere to all hot-work permits, underground mining procedures, fall protection, and safety requirements.
Qualifications
- Valid CWB Welder Certification (required).
- Journeyperson Welder certification or equivalent trade qualification (preferred).
- Experience fitting and butt welding carbon-steel pressure piping; heavy-wall piping experience preferred.
- Ability to produce welds that meet visual inspection and NDE requirements.
- Strong skills in pipe fitting, alignment, bevel preparation, welding, and repair work.
- Ability to read technical drawings, specifications, and quality documentation.
- Underground mining, industrial construction, shaft, raise, or confined-space welding experience is an asset.
- Valid driver's license and ability to meet mine-site access requirements.
Working Conditions
- Physically demanding underground construction environment.
- Work around mobile equipment, suspended loads, and open boreholes.
- Ability to work at heights, in confined areas, and under changing underground conditions.
- Willingness to work 11.5-hour rotational shifts in Ontario.
Safety
- Maintain a strong safety focus by identifying and controlling hot-work, fire, fall, fume, stored-energy, and open-borehole hazards.
- Follow all site procedures, permits, ventilation requirements, PPE standards, and stop-work protocols when unsafe conditions arise.
