The team
Telling the Toronto Metropolitan University story - that is the role of the Marketing and Communications team. Working with partners inside and outside the university to enhance the profile and reputation of TMU. Our goal is to create high-quality, compelling marketing and communications solutions that support the TMU brand and enhance its reputation to influence decisions that students, faculty, donors,partners, alumni and staff make about connecting with us.
The Opportunity
- The Manager, Social Media develops and executes an integrated social media strategy that supports Toronto Metropolitan University's (TMU) brand, marketing, and communications objectives across institutional social media accounts, in close collaboration with the Senior Director, Marketing and Creative.
- Develops and executes an integrated social media strategy that strengthens the university's brand, engages prospective and current students, alumni, and faculty, and advances institutional goals through regular performance reporting and data-driven refinement.
- Leads a team of content specialists and digital professionals, setting clear goals, timelines, and strategic priorities to drive meaningful engagement and brand growth across platforms.
- Serves as the university's primary social media lead and subject-matter expert, managing multiple accounts and competing priorities while ensuring a cohesive, consistent brand voice across all channels.
- Ensures social media policies are followed, best practices stay current, and new channels are adopted thoughtfully as the landscape evolves.
Key Responsibilities
- Develops and implements social media plans and initiatives in consultation with the Senior Director, Marketing and Creative, aligned with the University's marketing, communications, and brand objectives, including setting clear goals, KPIs and timelines for the social media team, leading progress toward achieving strategic objectives across all University social media accounts.
- Manages multiple University social media accounts simultaneously, ensuring content is relevant, timely and aligned with institutional priorities and brand standards.
- Leads the development of a comprehensive content calendar, managing the ideation, scheduling, and publishing of content across all University social media accounts to ensure a consistent and strategic cadence of posting, maintaining a strong and consistent brand voice across all social media platforms to ensure content reflects TMU's values, personality, and communications objectives.
- Uses data and analytics to inform adjustment to content plans, platform priorities, and resource allocation, presenting findings and recommendations to senior leadership as needed, identifying opportunities for growth, engagement, and improvement on an ongoing basis.
- Manages the ongoing adoption and compliance of the University's Social Media Policy across all University units, departments, and faculties by developing and maintaining social media guidelines, best practices, and governance frameworks to support consistent and policy-compliant social media activity across the institution.
- Manages the relationship between various University areas, acting as the primary point of contact for social media inquiries, requests, and strategic guidance across the institution, including, liaising with external partners, platform representatives, and agency partners as needed to support social media initiatives and campaigns.
- Provides social media expertise, guidance and training across the University, delivering training sessions, professional development workshops, and presentations to University staff and marketing teams as needed.
- Manages and supervises staff workflow of staff including full-time, part-time, freelance, and agency resources, assigns and prioritizes tasks, establishes goals, sets expectations and evaluates performance.
Qualifications

- Completion of a post-secondary degree in Marketing, Digital Marketing, Communications, Public Relations or a related field.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in social media management, with at least 3 years in a people leader role including:
- Proven experience developing and executing integrated social media strategies across multiple platforms and accounts.
- Hands-on experience in content creation including writing, editing, and producing social media content across a variety of formats such as short-form video, reels, stories, graphics, and written posts.
- Experience managing issues and reputational risks on social media, working collaboratively with communications and leadership teams to respond effectively.
- Supervisory experience, preferably, in a unionized environment is required.
- Strong understanding of content strategy, storytelling, and brand voice across multiple social media platforms and audience segments.
- Deep knowledge of various social media platforms, including platform-specific algorithms, content formats, and best practices.
- Strong understanding of social media analytics, reporting tools, and platform best practices.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards and best practices for social media content including captions, alt text, and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disability Act (AODA) compliance.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace for reporting, presentations, and project planning.
- Working knowledge of content creation tools
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong eye for detail, brand voice, and content quality.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
- Performance management and collaboration skills with experience managing staff and providing work direction;
- Interpersonal and client relationship management skills with experience discussing project needs and options, analyzing and interpreting requirements from a design perspective;
- Understanding of and sensitivity to principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.
- Capacity to build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external partners; collaborate across organizational boundaries with various functions and coordinate with vendors.
- Commitment and working knowledge to support University’s principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).
