Original job description

Our client is seeking an experienced Manager, Cost Control to provide functional leadership across project cost control and project accounting activities within a large capital projects environment.

This is a long term contract opportunity for a site-based position at a mine operation in the Kamloops, British Columbia area and will require the successful candidate to work on either a 14 days on / 7 days off or 10 days on / 4 days off FIFO rotation, depending on project requirements and candidate availability.

Reporting to the Director, Project Controls, this position will play a key role in strengthening cost management practices, developing standards, improving consistency across projects, and supporting project teams throughout the full project lifecycle.

The role combines two closely connected areas of responsibility: Project Cost Control and Project Accounting.

From a cost control perspective, the Manager will provide oversight and guidance across budgeting, commitments, incurred costs, forecasting, change management, contingency management, reporting, and cost analysis.

From a project accounting perspective, the position will act as a key connection point between project teams and corporate finance, helping establish consistent accounting practices and ensuring appropriate financial governance across a portfolio of major projects.

Key Responsibilities

Provide functional leadership and subject matter expertise across project cost control and project accounting.
Promote a strong safety culture and ensure work is carried out in alignment with established health, safety, and environmental expectations.
Lead, mentor, and develop teams of Project Cost Controllers and Project Accountants.
Provide coaching, performance feedback, career development support, and formal performance evaluations.
Assess project resource requirements and support workforce planning across multiple projects, execution strategies, and stages of development.
Establish and continuously improve project controls standards, processes, procedures, templates, and governance practices.
Review project cost control plans, project setup structures, and cost system configurations to ensure consistency and appropriate controls.
Provide oversight of budgeting, cost commitments, actual expenditures, forecasting, accruals, contingency, change management, and cost reporting.
Review project cost performance and identify trends, risks, variances, and emerging financial issues requiring management attention.
Support project setup reviews, health checks, stage gate reviews, assurance activities, and other independent project assessments.
Conduct or support audits of projects and service providers to evaluate compliance with established project controls requirements.
Participate in peer reviews of major capital projects, joint venture projects, and other significant project initiatives.
Work closely with project leadership, finance teams, engineering, construction, procurement, contracts, and other project functions.
Contribute to the broader strategic direction and continuous improvement of the Project Controls function.
Support special initiatives and other project controls activities as required.

Project Accounting Responsibilities

Develop and enhance project accounting policies, procedures, standards, and templates appropriate for large capital projects.
Define clear responsibilities and interfaces between Project Accounting, corporate Finance, business unit Finance, and project teams.
Partner with finance stakeholders across the organization to establish consistent expectations, processes, and reporting requirements.
Evaluate accounting requirements across the project portfolio and incorporate those requirements into broader functional strategies.
Provide leadership and oversight for project accounting activities, financial controls, contract audits, and related financial services.
Ensure project financial information is accurate, consistent, and appropriately integrated with project cost control reporting.
Identify significant financial trends, exposures, or performance concerns and communicate these effectively to senior leadership.
Support improvements to financial governance and reporting across complex capital projects.

Qualifications and Experience

Post-secondary education in Engineering, Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline. A relevant trade qualification combined with significant project experience may also be considered.
Approximately 15 or more years of progressive experience within project cost control, project accounting, project controls, or related capital project functions.
Significant experience working within an owner organization, ideally supporting major capital projects.
Strong field-based project experience within construction, mining, infrastructure, energy, industrial, or other major project environments.
Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, and developing project controls or finance professionals.
Strong understanding of how project accounting and project cost control functions integrate within complex capital projects.
Experience developing project controls standards, procedures, templates, governance frameworks, and reporting practices.
Strong knowledge of engineering, construction, and major project execution environments.
Solid technical understanding of accounting principles and their application within capital projects.
Strong analytical capability with the ability to identify cost trends, financial risks, and project performance issues.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work effectively across project, finance, and executive leadership teams.
Strong planning, prioritization, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Willingness and ability to work a site-based FIFO rotation of either 14/7 or 10/4 in the Kamloops, British Columbia area.

Additional Assets

Experience with one or more of the following would be considered beneficial:

Cost management platforms such as Oracle Primavera Unifier, PRISM, Cleopatra, or comparable systems.
Scheduling platforms such as Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project.
Professional designations such as CPA, P.Eng., CET, CCP, CEP, PMP, or similar.
Experience supporting major mining, industrial, infrastructure, energy, or resource-sector capital projects.
