Employment Type: 2-Year Contract (Salaried Position)

Work Schedule: Fly-In, Fly-Out (FIFO), 14 Days On / 14 Days Off

Accommodations: Camp-Based Position

Compensation: Competitive Salary + Substantial Construction Completion Bonus

About the Opportunity

Torus Talent is partnering with a leading Canadian mining company to recruit an experienced Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Field Advisor for a major gold mine expansion project in Northern British Columbia.

This is an opportunity to contribute to a large-scale capital expansion involving significant earthworks, civil infrastructure development, and construction activities within an operating open-pit mine.

The position offers a two-year salaried contract with a 14-day-on, 14-day-off fly-in, fly-out rotation, camp accommodations, and a substantial construction completion bonus.

The successful candidate will be a hands-on safety professional who enjoys working directly with construction crews, contractors, and site leadership to promote safe work practices and maintain high standards of regulatory compliance.

This is predominantly a field-based position, with approximately 80% of working time spent supporting active construction and earthworks operations.

Key Responsibilities

Field Safety & Construction Oversight

  • Provide day-to-day HSE support across major civil construction and mine expansion activities, including earthworks, haul road development, tailings infrastructure, and water management systems.
  • Partner with construction supervisors, contractors, and site personnel to identify workplace hazards and implement practical risk mitigation measures.
  • Perform routine worksite inspections, equipment safety checks, and behavioural safety observations.
  • Review and facilitate Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRAs), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and other hazard assessment processes.
  • Support the development and maintenance of job hazard assessments as construction activities and project requirements evolve.
  • Monitor contractor safety performance, identify emerging risks, and work collaboratively with field leadership to address deficiencies.
  • Coordinate the availability and procurement of essential safety equipment, including PPE, gas detection equipment, and fall protection systems.

Incident Management & Regulatory Compliance

  • Support compliance with the BC Mines Act, Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in British Columbia, and applicable WorkSafeBC requirements.
  • Respond to workplace incidents, near misses, equipment damage, and environmental events, assisting with immediate response and investigation activities.
  • Facilitate incident investigations, including witness interviews, evidence collection, root-cause analysis, and corrective action development.
  • Work with contractors and operational leaders to ensure investigations are completed accurately and within established timelines.
  • Maintain incident management records and monitor outstanding corrective actions through to completion.
  • Assist with regulatory inspections, including preparation of supporting documentation and follow-up on identified deficiencies.
  • Provide timely incident reporting and safety updates to project management and senior site leadership.

HSE Training, Reporting & Contractor Engagement

  • Deliver safety orientations, toolbox talks, pre-start safety discussions, and site-specific training to employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Coordinate contractor onboarding and review HSE prequalification documentation, including safety management plans, insurance, WorkSafeBC records, and relevant certifications.
  • Participate in contractor safety meetings and provide ongoing coaching to improve field-level safety performance.
  • Support site driving assessments and safe vehicle operation practices throughout the mine property.
  • Maintain inspection records, training documentation, incident registers, and HSE performance tracking systems.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly safety reports, performance metrics, and presentations for project stakeholders and leadership.
  • Monitor safety observation programs, follow up on incomplete audits, and assist site personnel with meeting HSE performance objectives.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Certificate, diploma, or degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related discipline.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant HSE experience within open-pit mining, heavy civil construction, large-scale earthworks, or comparable industrial construction environments.
  • Strong understanding of BC mining safety legislation, regulatory compliance, and WorkSafeBC requirements.
  • Experience supporting construction activities involving large mobile equipment, including haul trucks, excavators, dozers, and graders.
  • Familiarity with incident investigation and root-cause analysis methodologies such as TapRoot, ICAM, or 5-Whys.
  • NCSO, CRSP, or CRST certification is considered a strong asset.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's licence or provincial equivalent with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to meet applicable pre-employment medical and drug and alcohol screening requirements.

What We're Looking For

  • A proactive, field-oriented safety professional who is comfortable spending most of the workday alongside construction and mining crews.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to coach and influence workers and supervisors at all levels.
  • A practical approach to identifying and resolving safety concerns in fast-paced construction environments.
  • Confidence working independently and navigating active industrial worksites, including remote access roads and areas with heavy equipment traffic.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Willingness and physical ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and challenging terrain.

This position offers the opportunity to play an important role in a significant gold mine expansion project in Northern BC.
