Original job description
Process Safety Engineer
Tourmaline Oil Corp. is a senior Canadian crude oil and natural gas exploration and production company. We are focused on long-term growth through an active exploration, development, and acquisition program in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin.
We are seeking a Process Safety Engineer to join our Calgary office beginning January 2027.
Reporting to the Director, Production Operations, this role will work closely with field Operations, HSER, and Calgary Engineering teams to develop and strengthen Tourmaline’s process safety program. The successful candidate will provide technical guidance and support to identify, assess, and manage process safety risks across our assets.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for, or assist with, the following:
- Support the development, implementation, and auditing of Tourmaline’s process safety management system in alignment with CSA Z767, including tracking and reporting leading and lagging process safety indicators.
- Develop, review, and maintain corporate process safety standards and engineering practices, applying a professional engineering stamp to applicable documents within their area of practice.
- Lead and facilitate process hazard analyses, including Hazard and Operability (HAZOP), Hazard Identification and Consequence Analysis, and Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) studies, as well as study revalidations.
- Support safety instrumented system design in accordance with IEC 61511 / ISA 84, establish performance standards and assurance activities for safety-critical equipment, and manage safety bypass and override processes.
- Perform or review fire, explosion, and toxic release consequence modelling, including hydrogen sulphide (H₂S), facility siting assessments, and relief and flare system reviews.
- Collaborate with Operations, HSER, and Engineering to review and develop operating and work procedures, including safe single isolation procedures, and provide professional engineering approval where required.
- Review equipment, process, and procedural changes through the Management of Change process to ensure risks are identified, assessed, and appropriately managed before implementation.
- Support investigations of process safety incidents and near misses, including root cause analysis, corrective actions, and communication of lessons learned.
- Participate in Tourmaline’s emergency response activities and provide process safety input during facility design and project stage gate reviews.
- Visit field sites, coach Operations and Engineering personnel, mentor less experienced engineers, and strengthen awareness of process safety risks across the organization.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical, mechanical, petroleum, process, or electrical/instrumentation engineering, or an equivalent engineering qualification.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered and in good standing with APEGA, with the ability to authenticate applicable engineering documents.
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in process safety, process engineering, or facilities engineering within the oil and gas industry, including demonstrated experience leading PHAs and HAZOP studies.
- Working knowledge of CSA Z767, IEC 61511 / ISA 84, Alberta and British Columbia occupational health and safety requirements, and applicable AER directives, including Directives 056, 060, and 071.
- Experience using process safety assessment and incident investigation methods and tools, such as PHAPro, BowTieXP, or TapRooT.
- Experience reviewing and updating piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and cause-and-effect diagrams.
- Strong facilitation, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build consensus and work effectively across Operations, HSER, and Engineering teams.
- Ability to travel to field locations, including sour gas facilities, and obtain H₂S Alive and other required site certifications before field visits.
Additional Assets
The following qualifications and experience would be considered assets:
- Professional registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), with the ability to authenticate engineering documents in British Columbia.
- Previous field or operations experience, particularly in sour gas operations.
- Experience developing, implementing, or auditing a process safety management system.
- Experience with consequence modelling software, such as PHAST.
- Familiarity with API RP 14C, API 520/521, and CSA Z662.
- Familiarity with emergency planning zone determinations for hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) and high vapour pressure (HVP) products.
- Experience mentoring or coaching engineers and field personnel.
This is a full-time, office-based position in Calgary, with periodic travel to field sites in Alberta and British Columbia.
