Original job description

Be a part of our mission! As a world leader in creating comfortable, sustainable, and efficient climate solutions for buildings, homes and transportation, it's our responsibility to put the planet first. For us at Trane Technologies, and through our businesses including Trane® and Thermo King, sustainability is not just how we do business - it is our business. Do you dare to look at the world's challenges and see impactful possibilities? Do you want to contribute to making a better future? If the answer is yes, we invite you to consider joining us in boldly challenging what's possible for a sustainable world.

Learn about our benefits designed for you to Thrive at work and at home.

We boldly go.

Where is the work:

Our BrainBox AI Workplace Presence model dedicates specific in-office days each month to focus on relationships, learning and innovation.

What's in it for you:

A sustainable future demands ongoing digital advancement. Our digital solutions team leads the way in developing next-generation climate technology focused on reducing demand-side energy consumption and emissions. Our team - including BrainBox AI, Nuvolo, and more - combines technical expertise with advanced analytics to create data-driven solutions that add real value for customers, communities, and the planet. Whether you're advancing AI in HVAC or driving analytics for greater efficiency, your ideas will help engineer solutions for stronger communities and a sustainable world.

You'll get to build the brains behind smarter buildings. As a Software Architect, you'll lead the design and development of the backend services that power our Cloud-based Building Management System. You'll solve complex technical challenges, influence architectural decisions, and drive the delivery of scalable, reliable software that has a real-world impact. Working alongside talented engineers and cross-functional teams, you'll help shape the technical direction of our platform while mentoring others and raising the engineering bar.

What You Will Do

Define and evolve the architecture of scalable, secure, and high-performance backend systems and microservices.
Design end-to-end software solutions, ensuring seamless integration across services, platforms, and cloud infrastructure.
Lead the architecture and design of distributed systems, cloud-native services, APIs, event-driven systems, and AI-powered applications.
Design and deliver production-ready generative AI and agentic AI capabilities that enhance products, automate workflows, and create measurable business value.
Partner with Product Managers and stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical designs and architectural solutions.
Establish and promote software engineering standards, design patterns, coding guidelines, and best practices across the team.
Evaluate and recommend technologies, frameworks, and tools to support current and future business needs.
Identify technical risks, architectural bottlenecks, and scalability challenges, and develop mitigation strategies.
Provide technical leadership and mentorship through architecture reviews, design reviews, and code reviews.
Ensure software architecture aligns with security, performance, reliability, maintainability, and business objectives.
Own technical delivery, coordinating implementation and aligning execution across multiple workstreams.
Evaluate emerging AI technologies and engineering approaches, identifying opportunities to responsibly integrate them into products and practices.

What You Will Need to Be Successful

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
7+ years of professional software development experience, including demonstrated experience designing software architecture for complex applications.
Proven experience delivering end-to-end software solutions from architecture and design through implementation and production deployment.
Strong proficiency in Python and object-oriented software design principles.
Demonstrated experience designing scalable, distributed, and cloud-based systems using AWS managed services (Lambda, SQS, API Gateway, EventBridge, etc.).
Strong understanding of software architecture patterns, APIs, relational and NoSQL databases, messaging systems, and system integration.
Experience working with SQL and NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, DynamoDB, or MongoDB.
Deep understanding of software engineering best practices including testing strategies, CI/CD, observability, code quality, and maintainability.
Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools and workflows.
Strong proficiency with Git and modern software development practices.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Experience mentoring engineers and providing technical leadership across development teams.
Curiosity and enthusiasm for emerging technologies, with a desire to continuously learn and apply modern engineering practices.
