Trans Mountain Corporation operates Canada’s only pipeline system transporting oil products to the West Coast. We deliver approximately 890,000 barrels of petroleum products each day through a dual pipeline system of more than 1,150 kilometres of pipeline in Alberta, British Columbia and Washington state.

Trans Mountain also operates a state-of-the-art loading facility, Westridge Marine Terminal, with three berths providing tidewater access to global markets.

Trans Mountain is seeking a collaborative, motivated, and values driven individual to join our dynamic team as a Senior Payroll Specialist (Contract). In this position, you will play a key role in the day-to-day operational oversight of payroll activities and ensure the accurate, timely, and compliant delivery of payroll services across Canada and the United States. The successful candidate will serve as the primary payroll subject matter expert and operational lead, providing guidance on complex payroll matters, legislation, controls, reconciliations, and payroll system administration.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee day-to-day payroll operations to ensure payrolls are processed accurately, timely, and in compliance with legislative and corporate requirements.
Act as the primary escalation point for complex payroll inquiries, issues, and exceptions.
Coordinate payroll activities across various payroll cycles, including bi-weekly, semi-monthly, and monthly payrolls.
Monitors payroll processing schedules and ensure critical deadlines are met.
Identifies operational risks and recommends corrective actions.
Support internal and external payroll audits, compliance reviews, and control testing activities.
Interprets payroll legislation and corporate policies and provides guidance on complex payroll matters.
Supports the Manager, Pension, Benefits & Governance in responding to audit requests and compliance matters.
Oversee payroll account reconciliations and payroll-related financial reporting activities.
Support general ledger balancing, month-end activities, accrual calculations, and year-end payroll processes.
Reviews statutory remittances, tax filings, year-end reporting, and related reconciliations.
Assists with vacation accruals, bonus programs, taxable benefit reconciliations, and other payroll-related accounting activities.
Supports business continuity and operational readiness during periods of organizational change and transformation.
Monitors payroll interfaces and integrations and coordinates resolution of issues impacting payroll operations.
Ensures payroll documentation and system procedures remain current.

Qualifications and Professional Experience

Post-secondary education in Payroll, Accounting, Human Resources or related discipline.
Certifications, such as Payroll Compliance professional (PCP) or Payroll Leadership Professional (PLP) considered an asset.
9+ years of progressive experience.
Experience managing end-to-end payroll operations in a complex organization.
Demonstrated experience improving or automating payroll processes and leveraging technology for efficiency.
Hands-on experience with ADP, SuccessFactors, or similar enterprise HRIS/Payroll systems.
Experience with ServiceNow or other high-volume ticket platforms.
Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with payroll reporting and reconciliations.
Understanding of payroll legislation and compliance requirements (Canada and the US).
Strong understanding of payroll controls, governance and audit requirements.
Strong vendor management and relationship management skills.
Experience reviewing and interpreting payroll policies and procedures.
A track record of delivering high‑quality work, managing competing priorities, and supporting key business processes or operational functions.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues and stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds and levels across the organization.
Effective communication skills, including the ability to convey information clearly, respectfully, and professionally.
Proven organizational skills with the ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail in a fast‑paced environment.
