ABOUT THE ROLE

TransAlta is seeking an Operating Technician to join the Operations team at our Kingston Generating Facility.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, this role is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the facility. The Operating Technician operates, monitors, troubleshoots, and maintains power generation equipment and associated systems to support plant performance, reliability, and regulatory compliance.

Working closely with Operations and Maintenance teams, this position contributes to preventive and corrective maintenance activities, outage planning, continuous improvement initiatives, and the achievement of operational and safety objectives.

This is a full-time, salaried role based out of our Kingston Generating station in Kingston, Ontario. This is a safety sensitive position which will require successful completion of pre-employment testing as a condition of employment.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Safely operate, monitor, start up, and shut down power generation equipment and auxiliary systems.
Utilize Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and other monitoring tools to optimize plant performance and reliability.
Support preventive and corrective maintenance activities and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
Troubleshoot operational issues and initiate work requests through the CMMS when required.
Coordinate with internal teams, contractors, and suppliers to support plant operations and maintenance activities.
Administer and support safe work practices, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, and hot work processes.
Maintain required operational records, reports, and regulatory documentation.
Contribute to outage planning, equipment improvement initiatives, and achievement of plant performance targets.

ABOUT YOU

A First or Second Class Operating Engineer Certificate.
A minimum of five (5) years of operating experience in power generation or related large industrial facilities.
Experience operating and monitoring power generation equipment and industrial systems.
Experience using Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and industrial control systems.
A strong understanding of power generation equipment, plant operations, and maintenance practices.
Demonstrated troubleshooting, problem-solving, and decision-making skills in both routine and emergency situations.
A strong commitment to safety, environmental compliance, and operational excellence.
Strong communication and teamwork skills, including the ability to maintain operational records and logbooks.
A valid driver's licence.
May be required to provide on-call support.

THE PERKS

A reasonable estimate of the pay range is CAD$110,000 - CAD $150,000 at the time of this posting. Individual pay is determined by job-related skills, relevant experience, education, and/or training. The top end of the range is reserved for individuals with exceptional, directly relevant expertise and a demonstrated history of strong performance within TransAlta. This range reflects base pay only and does not include our competitive bonus program and benefits.

Competitive salary
Annual and long-term incentives available for select roles
Company-matching pension plan
Flexible health benefits for you and your family
Generous vacation and personal days

We believe that diverse perspectives drive innovation and progress, and we’re committed to building a workplace where you can be your authentic self.

Ready to Power Up With Us? Excited about this role but don’t meet every single requirement? We still encourage you to apply. Studies have shown that women and people of colour are less likely to apply for a job unless they meet every single qualification. You might just be the candidate we are looking for.

WHAT TO EXPECT
