ACCOUNTING SPECIALIST – LEVEL 2

The TransX Group of Companies has an exciting opportunity for an Accounting Specialist – Level 2 to join our Yield & Financial Planning department in Winnipeg. Reporting to the Financial Supervisor, the Accounting Specialist – Level 2 focuses on providing advanced accounting support related to financial planning, yield analysis, and reporting. This role assists with the preparation of Monthly Operating Statements for assigned divisions, manages major assets, and acts as a liaison between Finance and Operating departments to ensure accurate and timely financial information. Acting as a partner for assigned Cost divisions, this position provides monthly summaries and leads Operations in cost control, The ultimate mission is to support budgeting and forecasting processes while ensuring efficient management of financial data to enhance operational decision-making. Upon the absence of the Financial Supervisor, they take on the additional responsibilities of ensuring the financial operating results for the various BUs are reported as expected.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Financial Reporting & Analysis: Analyze and allocate revenue and expenses as assigned. Analyze account transactions in TMW, TMT, and Great Plains to ensure coding is accurate and correct postings as needed. Prepare and post daily, weekly, or monthly transactions into Great Plains. Prepare accruals with estimates for monthly financial reporting to CN. Report requested variance analysis, impact statements, and monthly performance of assigned Cost divisions to supervisors and senior management, providing guidance to Divisional Leaders to assist with cost control decisions. Initiate and assist with continuous reporting improvements from information systems.
- Asset Management & Communication: Manage balances and entries for assigned major assets, including Fixed Assets or Receivables. Communicate directly with CN regarding balances, coordinate activities, and collaborate across multiple divisions ensuring accuracy and adherence to CN and TransX policies. Coordinate with internal TransX departments impacting balances or financial activities, identify risks or concerns with balance values, and ensure corporate plans are implemented.
- Reconciliations & Month-End Support: Reconcile various assigned Balance Sheet accounts and prepare necessary correcting entries. Prepare and report detailed revenue and expense reports to senior management and key stakeholders. Support month-end and year-end closing processes to guarantee compliance with accounting standards.
- Team Leadership & Financial Support: Conduct ad hoc analysis as required to support strategic decision-making. Serve as a Lead within the Financial Reporting group by training new Accounting Associates on systems (TMW, TMT, Great Plains, Vena). Act as a liaison between various Business Units and departments, continuously review processes, and recommend improvements for enhanced efficiency. Cover key leadership responsibilities during the absence of the Financial Supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Certification: Currently working toward a professional accounting designation (CPA – Canada) and enrolled in the PEP program (expected completion within 1–2 years).
- Experience: Minimum of 4–6 years of experience in accounting or financial analysis.
- Technical Skills: Strong proficiency in current accounting software, including Great Plains, Vena, TMW, and TMT. Advanced skills in MS Office Suite, specifically MS Excel.
- Industry & Accounting Knowledge: Strong knowledge of Accounting Policies and Practices within Canada and the USA.
- Soft Skills: Demonstrated analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail. Well-developed organizational, time-management, and planning capabilities. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise effectively across all levels inside and outside the organization.
