The Strategy, Performance, and Business Intelligence division provides the integrated strategy, data, and performance framework that enables THP to deliver the Plan to 2030. We align planning, data infrastructure, analytics, research insights, and data stewardship to drive equitable outcomes and support system-wide decision-making. Through strong governance and partnership, we ensure strategy is translated into action and impact. Building upon a number of key achievements, this portfolio will continue to advance the development of an enterprise health data strategy and roadmap.
Position Summary:
The Senior Business Intelligence Data Engineer will report jointly to the Director of Business Intelligence and Data Governance and the Manager of Cogito and Business Intelligence (BI). The individual will be responsible to advise, direct and develop BI Solutions in SSRS, Power BI, Data warehousing, and BI developed data applications. The SBI Data Engineer is a senior-level professional who is responsible for leading the technical aspects of BI projects and continuing the advancement and implementation of new BI technologies to set THP up for success and align to the Digital Health roadmap. The SBI Data Engineer should have a strong technical background in BI and data engineering, as well as excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. They should be able to effectively manage technical resources, prioritize tasks, and ensure that projects are delivered on time and within budget.
Job Responsibilities:
The Senior Business Intelligence Data Engineer is responsible for:
Providing technical direction, standards, quality control oversight, and expertise to ensure integration of all BI projects - current, previous, and planned – working collaboratively with BI and other stakeholders to ensure adherence to BI team standards (e.g. project and solution documentation, formatting, programming, etc.).
Managing data integration: This includes designing and implementing solutions to integrate data from multiple sources, and ensuring data is properly transformed and cleansed during the integration process.
Defining data models and schemas: This includes creating data models that accurately represent the organization’s data and designing schemas that support efficient data storage and retrieval.
Designing and building data pipelines: This includes extracting data from various sources, transforming and cleaning the data, and loading it into a data warehouse or other storage system.
Optimizing data processing: This includes making sure data is processed as quickly and efficiently as possible, using techniques such as indexing, partitioning and clustering.
Design, development, and deployment of BI infrastructure and tools that support data analysis and reporting. This includes designing and building data pipelines, managing data storage, and optimizing data processing.
Designing and maintaining the logical and physical architecture of the organization’s data systems and ensuring that it aligns with the organization’s overall BI strategy.
Designing, developing, deploying, monitoring, and maintaining integrated databases adhering to industry standards and best practice.
Troubleshooting technical issues and providing technical support for the BI Team and other stakeholders.
Writing functional and technical specifications and user documentation for databases and applications.
Responsible for consulting both internal and external stakeholders to collect requirements and designing integrated BI solutions that are delivered with a high level of quality, on time and provide business value
Ensuring that THP’s data is accurate, accessible, and secure and that the hospital is able to extract insights and make data-driven decisions from that data.
Promoting team effectiveness by facilitating collaboration, sharing of best practice, innovation, bringing divergent views to consensus, teamwork, coaching, and ensuring timely communication of issues and points of interest.
Key Qualifications:
University degree with related experience in Computer Science, Management or related field
Advanced education and Business Intelligence work experience (i.e. > than 5 years) in the Microsoft BI stack. Expert Knowledge of Data modeling, SSRS, SSAS, Tabular Models/Cubes, SQL Server (2016 – 2023), PowerPivot, PowerView, and advanced SQL Scripting
Strong proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, Scala, C# or PowerShell.
Experience with Azure data services (such as Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, Azure SQL Database, Data Lake, Cosmos DB, and Azure ML) is an asset.
Experience managing/ leading large BI projects or processes with limited oversight from manager.
Experience coaching, reviewing and delegating work to Junior BI professionals.
Experience with data warehousing solutions and BI tools, such as Amazon Quicksight, Azure Synapse Analytics and Power BI.
Experience in reporting KPIs and other forms of performance reporting.
Experience delivering SSRS reports with a relational model, dimensional model or OLAP cube as the data source.
Previous experience in mobile reporting and cloud-based reporting and development is an asset.
Experience in upgrading Business Intelligence solutions to keep up with the most recent Microsoft product releases.
Experience in administration, upgrade and migration of Visual Studio 2022+ and TFS (Team Foundation Server)
Experience in translating business requirements into effective Business Intelligence solutions.
Knowledge of SharePoint and experience in developing web forms in .Net
Knowledge of SQL server database performance tuning, optimization and security.
Good presentation skills with solid communication capabilities and practices, both oral and written.
Ability to work on difficult and complex problems under pressure and tight timelines.
