Job Details
The Safety Data Analyst turns safety data into accurate, practical insights that help leaders understand operational risk, prioritize action, and measure improvement. The role is responsible for extracting, cleaning, validating, analyzing, and presenting data through recurring reports, dashboards, and decision-ready summaries. It also ensures that safety measures, definitions, and calls to action are reliable, consistent, and clearly communicated.
The Safety Data Analyst partners with Safety, Operations, Business Intelligence, Information Technology, and People and Culture teams to interpret data in its operational context. By connecting data with business processes and field activities, the analyst helps stakeholders understand what is driving performance and where focused action is required.
Responsibilities
- Develop a working knowledge of key safety processes, including inspections, behavior-based safety, hazard identification and control, incident management, emergency preparedness, corrective action management, critical risk management, and operational competency development and assurance, so reporting reflects operational realities.
- Produce scheduled and ad hoc safety reports for the Safety Department, Operations, and other key stakeholders to support recurring business reviews and emerging operational needs.
- Collect, reconcile, clean, and validate datasets from multiple sources, including incident management, assurance activities, hazard identification, corrective actions, training, and operational systems.
- Analyze leading and lagging safety indicators to identify trends, patterns, anomalies, and areas requiring further investigation. Summarize findings, limitations, and recommended follow-up actions clearly for the Manager and other stakeholders.
- Respond to data requests from internal teams in a timely and accurate manner.
- Build and maintain simple data-collection and workflow tools using Microsoft Forms, Microsoft Lists, Power Automate, and Power Apps to support process requirements, improve data quality, and reduce manual effort.
- Build and maintain Power BI dashboards and visualizations that use consistent definitions, clearly display trends and exceptions, and enable stakeholders to understand performance and identify required actions.
- Transform raw data into polished, presentation-ready reports that explain the significance of the results, identify key risks and opportunities, and communicate a clear story to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Assist in preparing data summaries and decks for leadership and cross-functional meetings (including board material and monthly leadership reports).
- Support safety data governance by maintaining a data dictionary, applying standardized definitions, documenting report logic and calculation methods, validating changes, and retaining evidence required for audit readiness.
- Monitor data completeness, accuracy, timeliness, and consistency; investigate identified issues; document root causes; and recommend corrective actions to the appropriate data owner.
- Support the maintenance and accuracy of data within the Safety Digital Management System, including audits and routine data clean-up.
- Participate in system updates or testing as required, providing input on reporting functionality and data output accuracy.
- Review existing data and reporting workflows to identify duplicate entry, manual hand-offs, control gaps, and recurring rework. Document improvement opportunities and bring practical recommendations forward for the Manager to evaluate and prioritize.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Data Analytics, Business Administration, or a related field.
- One to three years of experience in data analytics, reporting, or business intelligence is required. Experience working with safety, transportation, operational, or other risk-related data is an asset.
- Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, SharePoint, Power BI, Microsoft Forms, Microsoft Lists, and Power Automate is required. Experience with Power Apps, Power Query, DAX, SQL, data modelling, and relational data sources is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately, including applying role-based access, limiting unnecessary data exposure, and following applicable privacy, retention, and records-management requirements.
- Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to validating source data, calculations, filters, measures, and report outputs before information is released.
- Ability to present data clearly and simply and make complex information accessible to different audiences.
- Knowledge of leading and lagging indicators, incident classification, exposure-based measures, critical risk controls, and the limitations of using historical data to predict safety outcomes is an asset.
- Comfortable working collaboratively within a team and communicating proactively with a manager and internal stakeholders.
- Ability to question assumptions, identify misleading comparisons or incomplete conclusions, and explain data limitations clearly before findings are used to make decisions.
- Organized and reliable, with the ability to manage recurring reporting deadlines alongside ad hoc requests.
