Position Purpose and Summary
The Technical Services Supervisor is responsible for management and administration of all technical services that support the Library's delivery of services and resources to its users, including systems support, acquisitions of material in all formats, and cataloguing of material in all formats. Additional responsibilities include budget input, overseeing acquisitions and inter-library loan, providing coverage at the Borrower Services desk, supervising library technicians
Key Areas of Accountability
Systems Support
Provide support and administration of:
- SirsiDynix Symphony Integrated Library System and Electronic Management System
- EBSCO Discovery System, EBSCOAdmin, and EBSCO databases
- OCLC Tipasa and Woldshare ILL systems
- OCLC Cataloguing and Metadata Subscriptions
- Springshare Libguides
- EZProxy authentication
- Other library hardware and software
- Troubleshoot authentication and system issues
- Consult with internal TWU IT and vendor support as needed.
Cataloguing
- Create and maintain bibliographic/metadata records for materials in a range of formats (ex. print, electronic, special collections, audiovisual material), using current bibliographic standards and standard bibliographic utilities.
- Manage, configure, and maintains metadata (e.g., bibliographic records, authority records, other non-MARC metadata) for access to materials in all formats in the library catalogue, discovery layer, link resolver, institutional repository, and other discovery tools.
- Import and maintenance of batch bibliographic records (e.g., vendor provided e-book and e-resource records), modifying and expanding as needed.
- Creates policies and documentation for cataloguing and metadata systems and workflows.
- Liaison with third-party metadata vendors and contractors.
Acquisitions
Oversee acquisition of all library material:
- Print and electronic books using library acquisition software (ex, GOBI) or through direct purchase (ex. online retailers, from publisher).
- Manage approval plans and mediated purchasing (ex. DDA, EBA)
- Add acquisitions records to SirsiDynix. Monitor funds and fund codes.
- Provide annual acquisition reports.
Borrower Services
- Provides Borrower Services back-up coverage 2 days per week and as needed (ex. covering illness, vacation.).
- Provide monthly circulation statistics and other reports as needed.
Supervision
- Supervise other library technicians, clerks, and student workers in technical services, including annual performance reviews.
Other
- Provide input to library procedures and policies, especially in the technical services area.
- Pursue relevant professional development opportunities.

Job Standards and Requirements
Education and Certifications: Recognized Library Technician diploma required. Bachelor’s degree or diploma in a related discipline an asset (e.g. Computer Science) or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Experience: Three to five years relevant experience in a library environment, including at least two years in a systems environment and/or Technical Services, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Must demonstrate both aptitude and interest in systems, technology and technical services related work.
- Thorough understanding of library services, collections, technologies and resources
- Solid knowledge of current integrated library systems and bibliographic discovery layers, software and platforms (ILS, discovery tools, link resolvers, collection management software etc.).
- Solid knowledge of core library functions and the interrelated workflows between departments, especially in Technical Services.
- Experience administering an integrated library system (Sirsi/Dynix Symphony preferred).
- Knowledge of relevant electronic databases and online resources.
- Knowledge of cataloguing in an academic library environment with and understanding of workflows and processes. Experience with biblical/theological material is an asset.
- Knowledge of current descriptive cataloguing rules, both AACR2 and RDA, and how the two systems coexist in a library system.
- Knowledge of bibliographic format, description, classification and subject heading schema (e.g. MARC21, RDA, AACR2, LC Classification, LCSH, Canadian subject headings, and specialized Canadian classification schedules).
- Skilled in the assignment of LC call numbers, LC subject headings, Canadian classification call numbers, and Canadian subject headings.
- Strong analytical and problem-resolution skills.
- Competence with computer applications generally used in a business environment, such as Office365.
- Strong leadership and time management skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
- Evening and weekend work may be necessary.
