SENIOR DATA PLATFORM ENGINEER

Position Overview
As a Senior Data Platform Engineer on our Data & Analytics Team, you will be a hands-on technical leader responsible for designing, implementing, administering, monitoring, and continuously improving the organization’s enterprise data platform across on-premises and cloud environments. The role provides technical ownership of core data platform technologies including Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL, Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, Power BI infrastructure, and associated integration and automation services. The Senior Data Platform Engineer will ensure that database and data platform services are highly available, secure, reliable, scalable, recoverable, and cost-effective.
Working closely with Data Engineers, BI Developers, Analysts, Infrastructure, Security, Architecture, and application teams, the Senior Data Platform Engineer will provide a stable foundation for enterprise data and analytics solutions.
What You Will Do
SQL Server Administration & Database Platform Management:
- Administer, maintain, patch, upgrade, and troubleshoot on-premises Microsoft SQL Server environments across Development, UAT, Production, Disaster Recovery, and other enterprise environments.
- Manage core SQL Server services and components, including the Database Engine, SQL Server Agent, SSIS/SSISDB, SSRS, linked servers, Database Mail, and supporting platform services.
- Design, operate, and support high-availability and disaster-recovery solutions, including Availability Groups, failover testing, backup and restore strategies, point-in-time recovery, retention, and recovery procedures aligned with organizational RPO and RTO requirements.
- Monitor and optimize database performance, including query execution, indexing, statistics, blocking, deadlocks, CPU, memory, storage, TempDB, database files, and overall platform utilization.
- Implement and maintain database operational processes, including integrity checks, index and statistics maintenance, backup validation, SQL Server Agent jobs, alerts, schedules, and automated maintenance activities.
- Support database migrations, refreshes, environment synchronization, server consolidation, version upgrades, and modernization initiatives.
- Implement and support SQL Server data movement and change technologies such as Change Data Capture (CDC), Change Tracking, replication, and related integration mechanisms.
- Troubleshoot complex database and platform issues involving connectivity, performance degradation, failed jobs, storage constraints, corruption, availability, and recovery.
- Identify and evaluate opportunities to modernize on-premises SQL Server workloads using Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure SQL Database, Microsoft Fabric, and other strategic cloud platforms.
Database Security & Governance
- Administer SQL Server authentication, logins, users, server and database roles, and permissions across enterprise database environments.
- Implement and maintain role-based access control, least-privilege principles, privileged access reviews, and appropriate separation of duties for administrators, developers, applications, deployment accounts, and service accounts.
- Configure and maintain database auditing, security logging, activity monitoring, and related controls to support operational oversight and compliance requirements.
- Support database encryption and secure connectivity technologies, including Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), TLS, certificates, and protection of sensitive data where applicable.
- Partner with Cybersecurity and Infrastructure teams to address database vulnerabilities, security recommendations, patching requirements, audit findings, and remediation activities.
Microsoft Azure & Fabric Platform Engineering
- Design, administer, and optimize data platform services across Microsoft Azure and Microsoft Fabric, including Azure SQL, Fabric Warehouse, Lakehouse, OneLake, capacities, workspaces, gateways, connections, and security.
- Support Fabric and Azure integration technologies, including Fabric Data Factory, Azure Data Factory, pipelines, notebooks, Mirroring, Copy Jobs, shortcuts, and hybrid data movement between on-premises, cloud, and external sources.
- Monitor Fabric capacity, workload performance, throttling, resource utilization, and On-premises Data Gateway availability, performance, upgrades, connectivity, and disaster-recovery readiness.
Platform Reliability, Monitoring & Automation
- Implement proactive monitoring, alerting, health metrics, and operational dashboards across SQL Server, Azure, Fabric, gateways, pipelines, backups, storage, and other critical platform services.
- Develop automation for routine platform administration, maintenance, deployments, monitoring, access reviews, and environment configuration using PowerShell, T-SQL, Python, Azure CLI, REST APIs, and related technologies.
- Participate in production incident response, root-cause analysis, capacity planning, problem management, and preventative improvement, while maintaining operational runbooks and recovery procedures.
DevOps & Deployment
- Implement and support Git-based source control and CI/CD practices using Azure DevOps, deployment pipelines, database projects, DACPACs, PowerShell, and related deployment technologies.
- Establish controlled and repeatable deployment processes across Development, UAT, and Production, including database schema changes, production data-change scripts, segregation of duties, rollback planning, and post-deployment validation.
Data Platform Architecture & Standards
- Partner with Data Engineering and Architecture teams to define reusable platform standards and patterns covering configuration, security, backup, monitoring, performance, availability, deployment, and disaster recovery.
- Evaluate new Microsoft data platform capabilities and contribute to modernization initiatives that move appropriate SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS, and ETL workloads to Azure and Microsoft Fabric.
- Maintain architecture diagrams, platform configuration documentation, operational procedures, disaster-recovery documentation, and technical standards.
What You Bring
Technical Expertise:
- Strong hands-on experience administering Microsoft SQL Server in enterprise production environments, both on premise and cloud(Azure SQL Managed Instance and/or Azure SQL Database).
- Strong knowledge of SQL Server architecture, configuration, security, backup/recovery, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
- Experience with SQL Server Availability Groups and high-availability/disaster-recovery technologies.
- Experience administering SQL Server Agent jobs and database maintenance processes.
- Experience in Microsoft Fabric administration and architecture(Fabric Warehouse,Lakehouse,OneLake, Fabric Capacity, On-Premise Data Gateway)
- Experience with data integration technologies such as SSIS, Azure Data Factory, or Fabric Data Factory.
- Experience with scripting and automation using PowerShell, Python, T-SQL, or similar technologies.
- Understanding of enterprise networking, Active Directory/Entra ID, service accounts, managed identities, firewalls, private endpoints, and secure connectivity.
- Experience supporting business-critical production systems and troubleshooting complex technical issues.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in database administration, data platform engineering, cloud engineering, or a related technical role.
- Demonstrated experience managing production-critical data services with a strong analytical and problem-solving mindset.
- Sound understanding of enterprise security, governance, access control, reliability, and operational risk management principles
- Ability to manage competing priorities, respond effectively to production issues, and support reliable, secure, and highly available enterprise data platforms.

Salary
- The maximum potential base salary for this position is $125,000
This salary range reflects the expected base compensation for the role across Canada. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, qualifications, and scope of responsibilities. Trisura provides this range in good faith in accordance with applicable legislation.
