Original job description
Trycewell Partners has partnered with an established Western Canadian civil construction and industrial services organization to recruit a Manager, Business Development - Mining. This position can be based in Vancouver, Kamloops or Prince George, British Columbia.
Our client delivers light and heavy civil, earthworks, mine development, tailings and water management, site services, and reclamation and closure work for mining clients across Canada. This role covers mining across Canada, with a primary focus on British Columbia, Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Ontario. Our client is looking for someone who knows the mining sector in these regions, has working relationships with owners and operators, and can build a qualified pipeline of light civil, heavy civil and mining opportunities that draw on the full suite of our client's services, before projects reach formal tender.
If you have a network across Canadian mining, particularly in British Columbia and the North, and you want to turn those relationships into contracted work, this is worth a conversation.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a mining growth plan for British Columbia, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, and pursue mining opportunities elsewhere in Canada as they arise
- Identify mine development projects, sustaining capital programs, site services contracts and closure work across the mine lifecycle
- Build and manage a qualified pipeline of light civil, heavy civil and mining opportunities that support the organization's full suite of services
- Establish and strengthen relationships with mine owners, operators, exploration and development companies, engineering firms and EPCM contractors
- Position the organization early in the project lifecycle, from feasibility and permitting through procurement, ahead of formal tender
- Lead pursuits for light and heavy civil, earthworks and mine civil, tailings and water management, site services, and reclamation and closure
- Build relationships with First Nations and Indigenous communities near mine sites, and work with the Indigenous relations lead to structure partnerships and agreements
- Develop account plans for priority mining clients that drive repeat work and long-term site relationships
- Evaluate opportunities based on strategic fit, profitability, probability of award, execution risk, remote-site logistics and available resources
- Work closely with the Director, Business Development, estimating, operations and project teams to convert opportunities into profitable work
- Support proposals, prequalifications, presentations, commercial negotiations and go/no-go decisions
- Monitor mine permitting, financing and development timelines, competitor positioning and owner capital programs
- Maintain pipeline records in the CRM and report to leadership on opportunity status, expected award timing and forecasted revenue
- Travel regularly to mine sites, communities and client offices in British Columbia and the territories, including remote and fly-in locations
Qualifications
- 7+ years in business development, commercial leadership or project development
- 5+ years of direct experience in mining or mine-site contracting
- An established network of mine owners, operators and engineering firms in British Columbia and the territories, with a track record of turning those relationships into qualified opportunities and repeat business
- Proven experience developing and converting multi-scope opportunity pipelines across civil and mining work
- Experience with light and heavy civil, mine development, earthworks, tailings and water management, site services, or reclamation and closure
- Strong knowledge of how mining projects move through exploration, feasibility, permitting, construction, operations and closure, and where contractors are engaged at each stage
- Experience working with First Nations, Indigenous development corporations or Indigenous partnerships in the mining sector
- Commercial knowledge of project economics, estimating, contract structures (lump sum, unit rate, time and materials, and master services agreements), risk and operational delivery
- Experience working collaboratively with business development leadership, estimating, operations and project-delivery teams
- Strong communication, negotiation, presentation and relationship-management skills
- Degree or diploma in business, engineering (mining, civil or geological), construction management or a related field preferred
