POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Network Engineer (ITIL Tier 3) is responsible for leading the design, implementation, security, monitoring, and maintenance of the organization’s network infrastructure to ensure reliable, resilient, and secure connectivity across all departments and service locations. This senior-level position provides advanced Tier 3 support for complete network incidents, service degradation, connectivity issues, and infrastructure changes, and will assist with the rollout, configuration, and operational support of the FortiGate infrastructure. Working closely with Tier 1 and Tier 2 support teams, vendors, and internal stakeholders, the Senior Network Engineer will lead technical troubleshooting, perform root cause analysis, implement permanent fixes, maintain accurate documentation, mentor technical staff, and support continuous improvement of network operations within an Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) framework.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Network Infrastructure and Security – Design, implement, configure, maintain, and support network infrastructure, including switches, routers, wireless access points, firewalls, VPNs, network cabling, and related services. Assist with the rollout, configuration, testing, documentation, and ongoing support of FortiGate firewall infrastructure, including security policies, VPN connectivity, network segmentation, and site-to-site connectivity. Maintain network security controls, including firewall rules, VPN access, segmentation, access control lists, wireless security, and secure configuration standards. Support network-related infrastructure services such as DNS, DHCP, IP addressing, VLANs, routing, switching, wireless, remote access, and site-to-site connectivity.
- Incident Management and Technical Support – Provide Tier 3 escalation support for complex network incidents, outages, connectivity issues, performance concerns, and service degradation affecting users, sites, systems, and applications. Act as a technical lead during major network incidents by supporting rapid service restoration, technical communications, vendor coordination, and collaboration with Tier 1 and Tier 2 teams. Perform root cause analysis for recurring or high-impact network incidents and implement permanent corrective actions to reduce repeat issues.
- Program Development and Implementation – Plan, test, and deploy network changes, upgrades, patches, firmware updates, configuration changes, and security improvements in alignment with approved change management processes. Prepare technical input for change requests, including impact assessments, implementation plans, back-out plans, validation steps, and post-implementation review. Monitor network availability, performance, capacity, and security using approved tools; identify trends, risks, and opportunities for proactive improvement.
- Reporting and Documentation – Maintain accurate network documentation, diagrams, configuration baselines, inventory records, procedures, knowledge articles, and support artifacts for troubleshooting and audit readiness.
- Team Leadership and Vendor Management – Mentor and provide technical guidance to Tier 1 and Tier 2 staff; contribute to standards, escalation procedures, and improved ticket handling for network-related issues. Engage and manage vendor escalations by collecting evidence, reviewing logs, coordinating repairs or replacements, and validating service restoration.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- Desired Education, Knowledge, and Experience:
o Post-secondary diploma or degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Network Engineering, Cybersecurity, or a related field (or an equivalent combination of education and senior-level experience).
o ITIL Foundation certification (ITIL Level 3 preferred), with a strong understanding of ITIL concepts across incident, problem, knowledge, and change enablement practice.
o Advanced technical certifications such as Fortinet/FortiGate (FCP, FCSS, FCX), CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, and Microsoft Azure Networking, or equivalent firewall/network security experience, are an asset.
o Seven (7) years of progressive experience in network engineering and operations, including Tier 2 or Tier 3 escalation support in a complex network environment.
o Experience in supporting routing, switching, wireless networks, firewalls, VPNs, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, IP addressing, network monitoring, and connectivity across multiple sites or departments.
o Strong knowledge of network architecture, routing, switching, wireless, firewalls, VPNs, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, and network security best practices.
o Experience participating in change enablement, including risk assessment, planning, implementation, back-out planning, validation, and after-hours maintenance windows.
o Expert-level troubleshooting skills with a structured approach.
o Ability to produce clear technical documentation.
o Demonstrated ability to prioritize work based on impact and urgency, meet SLA expectations, and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
o Experience coordinating across teams and vendors, including escalation management and technical leadership during service outages.
