The Engineering Manager ensures that engineering practices, security controls, and delivery processes consistently meet business, regulatory, and performance expectations while fostering a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.

The Engineering Manager oversees engineering activities supporting customer-facing products, internal systems, and mission-critical financial services. Responsibilities span technical design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance across multiple teams and initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, coach, and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team across front-end, back-end, full-stack, and platform disciplines.
- Set clear expectations, goals, and growth plans that align individual development with organizational needs, including technical skill progression, leadership readiness, and role specialization.
- Conduct structured performance reviews, manage succession planning, and oversee recruitment strategies to build a high-caliber engineering organization.
- Cultivate a culture of accountability, collaboration, and psychological safety, encouraging engineers to take ownership, innovate, and continuously improve.
- Mentor senior engineers and emerging leaders, providing guidance on architecture, decision-making, and cross-team communication.
- Software Delivery & Agile Execution
- Oversee end-to-end delivery of software initiatives, ensuring predictable execution across planning, development, testing, deployment, and post-release validation.
- Champion Agile/Scrum practices, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily standups, retrospectives, and continuous flow of value.
- Partner closely with Product, Design, and QA to ensure customer-centric outcomes, clear acceptance criteria, and alignment on priorities.
- Drive accountability for delivery timelines, quality standards, and technical debt reduction while balancing speed with long-term maintainability.
- Proactively remove delivery blockers and coordinate across departments to maintain momentum and reduce friction.
- Technical Leadership & Architecture Oversight
- Provide architectural direction and technical leadership, ensuring systems are designed for scalability, security, reliability, and long-term sustainability.
- Review code, designs, and technical documentation, providing guidance that strengthens engineering quality and consistency across teams.
- Lead modernization initiatives, including cloud-native transformation, API-driven architectures, microservices adoption, and legacy system remediation.
- Ensure best practices in CI/CD, DevOps, and automated testing to enable fast, reliable deployments and high levels of test coverage.
- Promote engineering excellence through coding standards, design patterns, observability practices, and performance optimization.
- Security, Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure all systems meet stringent security and data protection requirements, including encryption, authentication, authorization, and secure data handling.
- Support compliance with regulatory frameworks such as PCI-DSS, SOC 2, and privacy legislation such as PIPEDA.
- Partner with Security, Risk, and Compliance teams to address vulnerabilities, manage audit findings, and strengthen the organization’s security posture.
- Lead secure coding practices and incident response readiness, ensuring teams can rapidly identify, contain, and resolve security threats.
- Embed risk-based decision-making into engineering processes while balancing innovation with operational and regulatory constraints.
- Stakeholder Collaboration
- Collaborate with Product, Operations, Finance, Compliance, and Executive leadership to align engineering priorities with business strategy and operational needs.
- Translate business requirements into scalable, maintainable technical solutions, ensuring clarity of scope and feasibility.
- Communicate technical risks, trade-offs, and progress to non-technical stakeholders in a clear and actionable manner.
- Act as a bridge between Engineering and the broader organization, ensuring transparency, alignment, and shared ownership of outcomes.
- Operational Excellence & Continuous Improvement
- Establish and track engineering KPIs such as deployment frequency, lead time for changes, defect rates, system uptime, and MTTR.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives, including post-incident reviews, workflow optimization, automation opportunities, and process refinement.
- Enhance development workflows, tooling, and team efficiency, ensuring engineers have the right environment and resources to deliver high-quality work.
- Promote a culture of learning and experimentation, encouraging teams to adopt new tools, patterns, and practices that improve productivity and reliability.
- Budget & Resource Planning
- Manage team capacity, workload distribution, and resource allocation to ensure optimal staffing for current and future initiatives.
- Provide input into budget planning, including tooling, infrastructure, cloud costs, training, and hiring needs.
- Optimize vendor and technology expenditures by evaluating cost-benefit trade-offs and ensuring investments align with strategic priorities.
- Forecast future resource needs based on product roadmaps, organizational growth, and evolving technical demands.
- Cross-Functional Alignment & Organizational Influence
- Shape Engineering’s role within the broader organization, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities, operational needs, and long-term business goals.
- Influence leadership-level decision-making by providing technical insight during planning, budgeting, and product strategy discussions.
- Represent Engineering in executive forums, ensuring risks, dependencies, and opportunities are clearly communicated and understood.
- Drive cross-department collaboration and strengthen relationships with Product, Security, Operations, Finance, Compliance, and Customer Support.
- Vendor, Partner & Technology Ecosystem Management
- Evaluate, select, and manage external vendors and technology partners, ensuring solutions meet performance, security, and cost requirements.
- Negotiate contracts and service agreements, balancing value, scalability, and long-term sustainability.
- Assess third-party tools, platforms, and SaaS solutions, ensuring they integrate effectively with internal systems and support engineering goals.
- Monitor vendor performance, ensuring SLAs, support responsiveness, and compliance obligations are consistently met.
- Strategic Planning, Governance & Long-Term Capability Building
- Contribute to multi-year technology strategy, ensuring engineering capabilities evolve with business growth, regulatory changes, and emerging industry trends.
- Establish governance frameworks for architecture, security, quality, and operational readiness across engineering teams.
- Build long-term engineering capabilities, including career pathways, leadership development, and technical specialization tracks.
- Plan for future scalability, ensuring systems, teams, and processes can support increased transaction volumes, new product lines, and expanded customer bases.
Education & Experience
- Formal education in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and extensive hands-on technical experience.
- Advanced certifications such as CSM or PMP demonstrating capability in structured delivery, project leadership, and cross-functional coordination.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in software development, including deep exposure to modern engineering practices, architectural decision-making, and secure coding standards.
- 3+ years of direct leadership experience managing engineering teams, driving delivery outcomes, and overseeing technical strategy.
- Experience in financial services or other regulated industries, with familiarity in compliance, audit requirements, and secure system design considered a strong asset.
- Proven track record leading the delivery of cloud-based, scalable, and resilient systems, including modernization initiatives and cloud migration programs.
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities, balance strategic and tactical responsibilities, and deliver results under time-sensitive conditions.
- Strong documentation and communication skills, ensuring clarity in technical specifications, architectural decisions, and stakeholder updates.
Technical Competencies
- Deep understanding of full-stack software development, including front-end, back-end, APIs, databases, and distributed systems.
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP, including cloud-native architectures, containerization, and infrastructure-as-code.
- Strong grounding in engineering best practices, including secure coding, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, DevOps workflows, and observability.
- Ability to evaluate and guide architectural decisions, ensuring scalability, performance, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
- Proficiency in reviewing code, technical designs, and documentation and providing constructive feedback that elevates engineering quality.
- Experience with compliance frameworks relevant to financial systems, including PCI-DSS, SOC 2, and PIPEDA.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose complex issues across multiple layers of the technology stack.
- Familiarity with modern development tooling, version control, backlog management systems, and engineering productivity platforms.
