The Director, Education Design & Intelligence will shape how TVO responds. Working across TVOkids, TVO Learn, Mathify, TVO ILC, and emerging lifelong learning initiatives, this leader will guide TVO Education’s approach to AI, advance future-focused learning design, build staff capability, and ensure our learning experiences remain relevant, inclusive, and impactful. The Role
Reporting to the Vice President, Education, the Director, Education Design & Intelligence leads TVO’s Learning Experience Design and Production functions, with direct accountability for the Manager, Learning Experience Design and the Production Manager.
The Director works in close partnership with the Director, Curriculum & Course Production, Director, Content Engagement, and Director, Academic Services. Together, the Directors bring complementary expertise to the design and delivery of TVO’s education portfolio. The Director, Education Design & Intelligence contributes specialized leadership in learning design, AI integration, emerging technology, professional learning, and production.
Operating at the intersection of learning science, educational design, artificial intelligence, and digital innovation, the Director translates emerging developments into practical strategies, standards, and learning experiences that strengthen learner outcomes and organizational capability.
How you will make an impact
Learning Design, Pathways & Assessment
- Lead the human-centred design and continuous improvement of learning experiences across TVO’s education portfolio, ensuring they are inclusive, accessible, pedagogically grounded, and responsive to changing learner needs.
- Establish and maintain shared learning design principles, standards, and frameworks that guide how educational experiences are conceived, developed, evaluated, and improved across programs and platforms.
- Work in close partnership with the Director, Curriculum & Course Production, Director, Content Engagement, and Director, Academic Services to strengthen learner journeys, pathways, engagement, and educational outcomes.
- Lead the continuous review and modernization of assessment and evaluation practices across TVO Education, responding to developments in AI, academic integrity, learner evidence, and emerging approaches to teaching and learning.
- Establish processes for regularly evaluating learning design standards, assessment approaches, and learner journeys, using research, learner feedback, outcomes data, prototyping, and testing to guide continuous improvement.
- Examine how AI and emerging technologies are reshaping curriculum, instruction, assessment, learner supports, credentialing, and progression, and translate those developments into practical opportunities for TVO.
- Embed collaborative design practices that centre diverse perspectives, lived experiences, accessibility, and learner needs.
AI Strategy, Emerging Technology & Professional Learning
- Develop and lead TVO Education’s AI in Education strategy, guiding principles, and implementation roadmap.
- Establish responsible, ethical, equitable, accessible, and learner-centred approaches to integrating AI into educational experiences, services, and internal workflows.
- Work closely with the Vice President, Education, the Chief Technology Officer, and technology teams to align AI and educational priorities with platform development, system integration, technology roadmaps, data governance, privacy, and security requirements.
- Identify, evaluate, and recommend emerging technologies, tools, platforms, and practices that can advance TVO’s educational mission and improve learning experiences.
- Provide timely advice to Education leaders on the educational opportunities, risks, and implications of AI and other disruptive technologies.
- Develop and implement a professional learning strategy that builds AI literacy, digital fluency, instructional capability, and confidence across the Education division.
- Create learning experiences, communities of practice, guidance, and resources that help employees use emerging technologies effectively, critically, creatively, and responsibly.
- Foster a culture of curiosity, experimentation, knowledge sharing, and continuous learning that enables teams to navigate educational and technological change.
- Contribute expertise to the development of AI literacy and fluency initiatives for educators, learners, and families in collaboration with the Directors responsible for programming, content, and academic services.
Learning Experience Design & Production Leadership
- Provide direct leadership and strategic direction to the Manager, Learning Experience Design and the Production Manager, developing a cohesive, high-performing, and multidisciplinary team.
- Ensure Learning Experience Design and Production operate as an integrated, multifunctional team supporting programming priorities across the Education division.
- Work with Directors and program teams to translate educational priorities into clear scopes, design approaches, production plans, and high-quality learner experiences.
- Establish effective operating models, standards, processes, and workflows that support quality, consistency, accessibility, efficiency, innovation, and accountability.
- Oversee the delivery of educational experiences and digital learning assets, ensuring work is completed to agreed standards, timelines, and program requirements.
- Balance portfolio-wide priorities and deploy design and production capacity where it can create the greatest learner and organizational impact.
- Lead, coach, and develop team members, creating clarity, encouraging collaboration, and building the capabilities needed for future-focused educational design and production.
- Manage budgets, contracts, technology investments, and resources associated with Learning Experience Design and Production, and oversee allocated resources for professional learning and innovation initiatives in AI and emerging educational technology.
Cross-Portfolio Leadership, Collaboration & Sector Engagement
- Serve as a fully integrated member of the Education leadership team, contributing to divisional strategy, planning, priority setting, and decision-making.
- Work in close partnership with Directors across Education to ensure that learning design, AI, production, technology, and learner experience decisions support shared educational priorities.
- Build strong working relationships across TVO so that educational design and AI initiatives are aligned with broader organizational, technology, research, communications, and operational directions.
- Represent TVO in provincial, national, and international conversations about AI in Education, learning design, assessment, emerging technology, and the future of learning.
- Develop relationships with educational institutions, researchers, government, technology organizations, and innovation networks that can contribute expertise, evidence, or capabilities to TVO’s work.
- Identify and help advance appropriate opportunities for research, pilots, technology integration, and collaboration that support TVO’s educational priorities.
- Bring emerging research, sector developments, and external perspectives into TVO to inform strategy, program design, professional learning, and continuous improvement.
- Help position TVO as a trusted leader in the responsible, equitable, and educationally sound application of AI in publicly funded education.
What you will bring to TVO
Qualifications and Experience
Education
A postsecondary degree in Education, Educational Leadership, Learning Design, Educational Technology, Instructional Design, Digital Learning, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field is required. An equivalent combination of education and significant relevant leadership experience will be considered.
Formal training, research experience, or demonstrated expertise in AI and its applications in education is essential.

Leadership Experience
- Significant leadership experience in educational design, educational technology, digital learning, AI in Education, innovation, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing AI or digital transformation strategies within educational or learning-focused organizations.
- Experience leading organizational capability-building and professional learning initiatives.
- Proven success leading innovation and change across multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience influencing educational strategy and working effectively with executive leadership teams.
- Experience operating successfully in highly collaborative, matrixed environments where influence is as important as direct authority.
- Experience managing creative, technical, and educational teams in complex organizations.
- Demonstrated experience leading the responsible integration of AI within educational programs or organizational settings, with consideration of human rights, educational equity, accessibility, privacy, governance, and ethics.
Functional Capability
- Deep expertise in instructional design, learning experience design, learning science, and educational innovation.
- Advanced knowledge of AI applications in education, including generative AI, adaptive learning, learning analytics, intelligent tutoring systems, and AI-assisted content development.
- Strong understanding of assessment and evaluation practices and how they are evolving in response to AI.
- Knowledge of learner pathways, credentialing ecosystems, future workforce skills, and lifelong learning models.
- Strong understanding of K-12, post-secondary, adult, and lifelong learning environments.
- Experience using evidence, research, and learning analytics to inform educational design and strategy.
- Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), AODA accessibility standards, and inclusive educational practices.
- Ability to translate emerging technologies and educational trends into clear, implementable strategies.
- Exceptional communication, facilitation, and presentation skills.
Sector
- Experience working within or alongside publicly funded education, government, Crown agencies, post-secondary institutions, research organizations, or not-for-profit organizations is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with Ontario's education system, policies, curriculum, learner populations, and broader educational ecosystem is considered a strong asset.
- Experience designing learning experiences for multiple audiences or life stages, such as K-12, post-secondary, adult, or lifelong learners, is required.
