Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at Augustana Campus, Camrose.
The Augustana Faculty at the University of Alberta invites applications from qualified candidates for one (1) tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Elementary Education (K-6). The successful candidate will join a Faculty with a growing set of undergraduate programs in Education, including combined BA/BEd and BSc/BEd programs with the Faculty of Education on North Campus, and a 4-year BEd Elementary program at Augustana, starting September 2027. The expected start date is July 1, 2027, or earlier.
We seek candidates who are intellectually curious and excited about supporting the Augustana tradition of high-quality undergraduate teaching, research and community service. The ideal candidate will be engaged in rigorous research and scholarship and its applications; committed to quality teaching and learning in face-to-face and online environments; engaged in service and professional development activities that advance education locally, nationally, and internationally; and dedicated to supporting the University’s commitments to access, community, belonging, Reconciliation, and social justice. The ideal candidate will also help to develop Education programs at the Augustana Faculty, while advancing teaching and scholarship that supports rural educational careers and institutions more broadly.
Responsibilities
Teaching (60%)
- The successful candidate will be expected to teach, revise, and develop undergraduate courses in our Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education program. Teaching will focus on the candidate’s area of expertise, as well as other areas of teaching in education that are delivered through our undergraduate programs.
Research and Scholarship (30%)
- The successful candidate will be expected to advance a program of funded research, publish research in peer-reviewed journals and other relevant sources, present at conferences, and otherwise contribute to the creation and dissemination of new knowledge in the area of elementary education.
Service (10%)
- The successful candidate will be expected to participate in service and professional development activities on and off campus. In particular, as we build capacity to deliver education programs at Augustana, the ideal candidate will have the ability to provide academic leadership to our educational programs.
Qualifications
- Applicants must have completed a PhD in Education or a closely related field. Doctoral candidates with a planned defense date prior to August, 2027 will also be considered.
- Applicants must have at least two years of relevant K-12 teaching experience in Canada.
- Applicants must demonstrate engagement in an education-related research program.
- Applicants must have an interest in and ability to teach in at least two of the following areas:
- Curriculum and pedagogy in elementary school Language Arts
- Curriculum and pedagogy in elementary school Mathematics
- Curriculum and pedagogy in elementary school Social Studies
- Curriculum and pedagogy in elementary school Science
- Educational Assessment
- Inclusive Education
Preferred Qualifications
- Evidence of successful teaching at the elementary (grades K-6) level in Canada.
- Evidence of effective teaching at the postsecondary level, particularly in courses related to elementary education/curriculum.
- Experiences with educational institutions and programs in rural settings.
- Evidence of collaboration in teaching and research contexts.
- The ability to teach courses in Indigenous education and knowledge systems will be an asset.
- The ability to teach courses in educational psychology, technology, and/or policy studies will be an asset.
- The ability to teach in the curricular areas of elementary school Art, Music, Physical Education and Wellness, and/or Health and Wellness Education will be an asset.
