The Business Solutions Analyst (BSA) for Shopify supports and enhances the University of Alberta’s enterprise e-commerce ecosystem, which generates over $8 million annually. Reporting to the Manager of Enterprise Asset Systems within Enterprise Applications, this position works closely with campus store administrators, colleges, faculties, and departments to implement, manage, and continuously improve online storefronts using Shopify+, a leading enterprise-level e-commerce platform.
The BSA ensures university-operated online stores are well-designed, compliant, and optimized to protect and grow a multimillion-dollar revenue stream. Core responsibilities include storefront configuration, multi-location inventory management, order workflow support, and advising on product presentation and operational best practices. The role also provides practical training and resources to empower store administrators to operate independently and adopt evolving Shopify+ capabilities effectively.
Beyond Shopify+, the BSA contributes analytical and technical expertise to Enterprise Applications initiatives that enhance institutional operations. This includes analyzing business processes, identifying system requirements, and implementing solutions that align with strategic priorities.
This role requires a collaborative problem-solver with technical knowledge, business acumen, and a client-service mindset. The BSA proactively identifies opportunities to improve business processes, safeguard sensitive data, and strengthen the university’s e-commerce presence - directly supporting sustainable revenue growth.

- Workflow Automation & Operations Optimization: Design, implement, and maintain automated business processes using tools such as Shopify Flow. Streamline order fulfillment, notifications, and store management workflows to reduce manual overhead and enhance operational efficiency across departments.
- Application Support & Incident Resolution: Act as the tier-2/3 technical support lead for e-commerce systems, resolving service tickets, inquiries, and incident escalations routed via the Enterprise Service Management application within established SLAs.
- Stakeholder Consultation & Store Administrator Enablement: Provide direct operational guidance and coaching to campus, college, and departmental store administrators. Conduct routine store check-ins, review product setups for quality and compliance, and deliver targeted training sessions, workshops, and presentations to foster smooth platform adoption.
- Security, Privacy & Compliance Governance: Enforce security standards by overseeing role-based access controls and leading Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) for new modules, apps, and integrations to ensure strict compliance with institutional data protection and privacy policies.
- Business Analysis & Requirements Engineering: Partner with faculty management, staff, and central business services to elicit and evaluate operational needs. Translate departmental requirements into functional specifications, process flowcharts, integration maps, and architectural solutions for platform enhancements.
- Integration & App Ecosystem Management: Research, evaluate, configure, and monitor third-party Shopify apps and enterprise service integrations - including shipping providers, analytics platforms, and payment processors - ensuring functional alignment and high-quality, secure delivery alongside technical teams and external vendors.
- Testing, Deployment & Continuous Improvement: Lead and execute User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and system integration testing, collaborating with QA teams and developers to triage and resolve issues before go-live. Track project delivery milestones, measure performance KPIs, and evaluate emerging e-commerce features to drive ongoing platform modernization.

- Data Querying & Performance Analytics: Proven competency querying relational databases (SQL/MySQL) and interpreting e-commerce analytics (Google Analytics, Shopify Analytics) to assess operational performance and optimize user journeys.
- Service Management & Stakeholder Facilitation: Practical working knowledge of Enterprise Service Management (ESM) platforms (e.g., ServiceNow, Freshservice) alongside exceptional interpersonal and presentation skills to train end users, resolve support tickets, and bridge academic/business units with technical teams.
