Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.
The University of Alberta manages a vast physical asset network of 1.5 million square meters across 480 buildings. Driven by the "SHAPE A Strategic Plan of Impact" vision and institutional growth, all infrastructure decisions must be evidence-based and highly utilized.
The Facility & Space Planning Analyst serves as a critical hybrid resource within the Space Planning & Stewardship (SPS) unit. The position splits its focus between technical data analytics (40%) and integrated support for Space Planners (60%). Operating as a liaison across teams, the incumbent utilizes predictive modeling, analytics frameworks, and inventory tracking to justify space downsizing and consolidation. Concurrently, they provide active planning support by assisting with space programs, existing conditions assessments, and inter-faculty interest holders facilitation to optimize existing university space assets.
Responsibilities
Part I: Support Space Planning - 60%
- Data Management: Audit, verify, and update physical space records in central CAFM databases (AssetWorks AIM, Meridian) and CAD drawings to ensure dual alignment with BLIMS and COU space categorization standards.
- Support Planning Work: Assist Space Planners with stakeholder needs assessments, draft preliminary AutoCAD test fits and spatial block layouts, and prepare governance presentations and infographics for project approvals.
- Administration: Standardize operational templates, restructure digital file architecture, and author SOP manuals to streamline intake, tracking, and documentation across Space Planning & Stewardship (SPS).
Part II: Facility Analyst - 40%
- Predictive Modelling: Develop theoretical space scenarios, utilization models, space budgets, and program metrics under Space Planner guidance to evaluate space optimization options and capital renewal strategies.
- Business Case Briefings & Summaries of Results: Draft business case briefings, presentations, and utilization reports using space inventory data and metrics to communicate findings to leadership and stakeholders.
- Audits, Reporting & Inventory: Conduct technical space utilization and functionality audits, generate custom analytical reports, and maintain space data inventories and AutoCAD base drawings in AIM and Meridian.
Qualifications
- The minimum formal education required for a candidate is a Bachelor Degree in Architecture, or a Bachelor Degree in Business, or related field, with relevant work experience in architecture, planning and design. Experience in business intelligence and analytics is preferred.
- Needs experience in the following software, or equivalent, is required: AutoCad, Tableau and Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign, and CAFM systems, such as AssetWorks’ AIM, and Blue Cielo Meridian.
- Needs experience and understanding of the following, or equivalent, space
programming, COU standards, benchmarking, space quantification and formulation, and optimization analysis.
Needs to be curious, proactive, responsive, and value clear communication,
transparency and collaboration.
