Assistant Professor, Theriogenology
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) at the University of Calgary invites applications for an academic position in
Theriogenology. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of
Assistant Professor (Teaching and Research) (tenure track). The anticipated start date is January 1, 2027 or a mutually agreed upon date.
Position Description
The successful candidate will provide didactic, laboratory, and clinical instruction in theriogenology to DVM students across the major domestic species. Course coordination and administration, contributions to professional skills and clinical skills teaching, participation in graduate courses, and supervision of graduate students and advanced clinical trainees are also expected, according to program needs and the expertise of the successful candidate.
The successful candidate will be expected to establish an independent, innovative, and extramurally funded research program in theriogenology or an allied area of reproductive science. Research may address any species or system relevant to UCVM's mandate, including but not limited to reproductive physiology and endocrinology, gamete and embryo biology, assisted reproduction, fertility and subfertility, developmental programming, reproductive pathology and infectious causes of reproductive failure, and data-driven reproductive management and reproductive health surveillance. Collaboration across UCVM research groups, with clinical colleagues, and with industry, producer, and government partners is strongly encouraged.
UCVM offers exceptional resources to support reproductive research and teaching, including W.A. Ranches at the University of Calgary, a 19,000-acre commercial cow-calf operation with approximately 1,000 Angus-based mother cows located 30 minutes from the Spy Hill Campus, as well as ready access to commercial dairy, cow-calf, purebred beef, equine, small ruminant, and companion animal caseloads through the Faculty's distributed network of clinical and industry partners. Laboratory space, core facilities, and mentorship for new faculty are provided, and the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning supports the development of teaching excellence and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
Service contributions will include participation in Faculty, University, and professional or community activities appropriate to the candidate's career stage.
Requirements
This appointment will be made at the rank of
Assistant Professor (Teaching and Research) (tenure track) in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
The following qualifications are required:
- A DVM, VMD, BVSc, or equivalent veterinary degree from a recognized institution;
- Advanced training in theriogenology or reproductive biology, demonstrated by a graduate degree (MSc or PhD) in theriogenology, reproductive physiology, reproductive biology, or a closely related discipline, or by completion of a residency, or other formal advanced clinical training in theriogenology (equivalent combinations of training and professional experience will be considered);
- Eligibility for licensure to practise veterinary medicine in Alberta with the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA);
- Demonstrated clinical competence in theriogenology in one or more species, with the ability and willingness to teach reproductive medicine across the major domestic species;
- Evidence of original high-quality research and scholarship, including peer-reviewed publications appropriate to career stage and the ability to attract extramural research funding;
- Ability and willingness to supervise DVM and graduate students and advanced clinical trainees;
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills, and a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in teaching, research, and mentorship.
The following will be considered assets, but are not requirements of the position:
- Board certification (or eligibility/progress toward certification; e.g. ACT, ECAR), or an equivalent recognized diploma in theriogenology or animal reproduction;
- Previous work in any field of animal embryology, developmental biology, or early developmental programming;
- Experience with assisted reproductive and reproductive biotechnologies in any species, including laboratory-based approaches;
- Experience with herd- or population-level reproductive management, reproductive data analysis, and production-limiting reproductive disease;
- A record of competitive grant funding and collaborative, interdisciplinary or industry-partnered research;
- Experience with curriculum design, clinical, classroom, or workplace-based teaching, simulation or clinical skills instruction, or the scholarship of teaching and learning;
- Experience teaching or practising within a distributed or community-partnered clinical education model.
NOTE: Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) normally requires evidence or promise of original high-quality research and scholarship and future development as a scholar. Evidence or promise of the ability to obtain funding may also be required where appropriate. Evidence or promise of teaching proficiency or professional activity may also be required.
UCVM employs a Distributed Veterinary Teaching Hospital model. Clinical time may be assigned in clinics in the community. If clinical time is assigned, opportunities are wide and varied and the successful candidate will be given guidance and support in establishing relationships with local clinics, based on desires and opportunities available.
UCVM's AVMA accredited DVM program provides a comprehensive general veterinary education to approximately 100 students per year. UCVM is a research-intensive faculty with expanding research, graduate education, and advanced clinical trainee programs.
