The opportunity:
Under the direction of the Administrator, Competition Events, the incumbent will support the growth and day-to-day administration of the Asper School of Business’ Case Competition portfolio. This role will coordinate the student journey from initial interest and application through team selection, training, competition preparation, and evaluation. Key responsibilities include administering application and selection processes, coordinating training and team preparation, managing case-related student groups, and facilitating communication and engagement among students, faculty, alumni, and business community stakeholders. The incumbent will also help promote awareness of the School’s Case Competition portfolio, the opportunities for stakeholder involvement, and the value and impact of experiential learning.
The incumbent will serve as the primary staff contact for competition-related student groups, including Asper Case Experience for Students (ACES), Asper JDC West (JDCW), and Asper MBA Games. The role will support student executives with governance, planning, budgeting, communications, and event coordination, while helping align the JDCW calendar of workshops and events with the broader competition portfolio. The incumbent will also facilitate connections with faculty, volunteers, alumni, and industry partners to support successful competition preparation and delivery.
The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:
- A university degree in a related discipline, preferably commerce, is required.
- An MBA or equivalent degree is preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of directly related administrative experience working in a university setting is preferred.
- Experience with university level case competition is preferred.
- Previous participation in, or coaching of, case competitions would be an asset.
- Knowledge of the University of Manitoba’s and the I.H. Asper School of Business’s policies is preferred.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Experience coordinating student programs, extracurricular activities, or competitive teams, including recruitment, selection, and ongoing student support, is required.
- Experience planning and delivering events, workshops, or training sessions, including scheduling, logistics, materials preparation, and on-site coordination, is required.
- Experience of recruiting, coordinating, and supporting volunteers is preferred.
- Experience administering application, selection, or evaluation processes, including the handling of sensitive and confidential student or personal information, is required.
- Experience preparing, summarizing, and analyzing records and statistics for reporting purposes is required.
- Experience in managing and maintaining comprehensive databases and records for annual and KPI reporting is required.
- Understanding of business case competitions and their formats is strongly preferred.
- Experience working with technologies required to facilitate appropriate learnings such as VR technology, Advanced PowerPoint and slide building platforms, is required.
- Experience working with various LLMs and understanding of use-cases relevant to support learning in a case environment is required.
- Experience working with student groups, student executives, or student associations is preferred.
- Strong experience of creating and manipulating Excel reports is preferred.
- Experience supporting budget preparation, expense tracking, and account reconciliation is an asset.
- Experience working with the University of Manitoba’s internal financial systems such as Concur, EPIC and Fast, is an asset.
- Experience supporting sponsorship, fundraising, or partnership development activities is an asset.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, coordinate, and establish work priorities and deadlines across multiple concurrent competitions and program cycles is required.
- Demonstrated understanding of the current consulting framework is required.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, document, and refine administrative processes and procedures is required.
- Excellent oral, written, and visual communication skills, with the ability to provide advice and to develop and present informational materials to students, faculty, and external stakeholders, are required.
- Demonstrated ability to advise and mentor students, including delivering constructive feedback and navigating challenging conversations with sensitivity, is required.
- Ability to understand, empathize, and interact effectively with a diverse student population is required.
- Ability to make sound independent judgments and to apply problem-solving abilities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment is required.
- Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Must have highly developed organizational abilities and be able to organize and prioritize workload with frequent interruptions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various levels of internal and external contacts, including students, faculty, alumni, volunteers, sponsors, and competition organizers is required.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate the work of volunteers and student groups without direct supervisory authority is required.
- Must be able to appropriately manage confidential information and situations, in accordance with university access and privacy requirements.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and the public in a diplomatic, firm but tactful, and courteous manner are required.
- Proficiency in the use of online video conferencing platforms such as Zoom, and in the use of online forms, survey, and registration tools is required.
- Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required.
- Must be able and willing to travel with student delegations to competitions within Canada and, occasionally, internationally.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
