Director, Undergraduate Student Services Office
Summary
The Director leads undergraduate student services in the College of Arts and Science. The role is responsible for setting direction, priorities, and goals for services that support more than 8,000 undergraduate students.
The Director leads multiple managers and their teams and ensures services work together to support student success from entry through graduation. Areas of responsibility include academic advising, first-year programs, student engagement, recruitment, academic policies, appeals administration, degree requirements checks, and student records.
The Director advises College leadership on issues affecting undergraduate students, leads service improvements, and works with campus partners to enhance the student experience. Working closely with the College General Manager, the Director identifies resource needs and advocates for resources to support College priorities and student success.
Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership and Planning
- Leads the vision and direction for undergraduate student services in the College.
- Develops goals, priorities, and plans that support the College's academic mission and strategic priorities.
- Leads and supports changes that improve services, student outcomes, and operational effectiveness.
- Provides advice to College leaders on matters affecting undergraduate students.
- Establishes measures to evaluate services and uses results to improve programs and processes.
- Identifies emerging student needs and develops strategies to address them.
- Guides the use of systems, technology, and new approaches that improve service delivery.
- Ensures all student service areas work together to provide a consistent and high-quality student experience.
People Leadership and Culture
- Leads multiple managers and provides overall direction for their portfolios and teams.
- Ensures services across all portfolios are aligned, coordinated, and focused on student success.
- Sets goals and expectations and monitors results.
- Supports collaboration across teams and service areas.
- Plans for future staffing and organizational needs.
- Recruits, develops, coaches, and evaluates direct reports.
- Supports leadership development and continuous learning.
- Creates a respectful, inclusive, and positive workplace culture.
- Promotes equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and Indigenous engagement.
- Models professional conduct and promotes a productive work and learning environment.
Student Success, Advising and Academic Services
- Leads the College's approach to undergraduate student success.
- Provides oversight for academic advising and undergraduate student services.
- Ensures advising services are student-centered, consistent, and aligned with university regulations and policies.
- Supports programs and services that help students succeed, persist, and graduate.
- Provides oversight for academic policies, faculty actions, academic standing processes, and appeals administration.
- Oversees advising systems and tools that support students and staff.
- Supports first-year transition programs, learning communities, student engagement initiatives, recruitment activities, student awards, and convocation activities.
- Monitors student success outcomes and develops plans to improve results.
Operational Excellence and Resource Stewardship
- Works with the College General Manager to identify operational needs and advocate for resources.
- Allocates resources across service areas to support College priorities.
- Sets and tracks service standards and performance expectations.
- Ensures effective processes are in place to address complex student situations.
- Reviews student, enrolment, and service data to support planning and decision-making.
- Improves workflows and processes to increase efficiency and service quality.
- Ensures resources are used effectively and responsibly.
Partnerships, Collaboration and Institutional Leadership
- Represents the College on committees, working groups, and university initiatives.
- Contributes to discussions and decisions that affect undergraduate students and student services.
- Contributes expertise to policy, planning, and service improvement initiatives.
- Engages student groups and other stakeholders in meaningful partnerships.
- Leads and supports projects that advance College and university priorities.
- Builds strong working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and university leaders.
- Participates in university-wide advising and student success initiatives.
- Works with campus partners to improve services and support student success.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in education, student affairs, public administration, social sciences, business, or a related discipline; a master's degree is considered an asset.
- Minimum seven years of progressively responsible leadership experience in student affairs, academic advising, enrolment management, student success, university administration, or a related post-secondary environment.
- Demonstrated success leading complex student service operations and advancing strategic initiatives that improve student success, retention, and engagement.
- Proven ability to provide strategic leadership, influence decision-making, and lead organizational change beyond formal reporting relationships.
- Experience leading through multiple layers of management and developing high-performing leadership teams.
- Experience in strategic planning, operational leadership, resource planning, and advocating for resources to support organizational priorities.
- Demonstrated knowledge of academic advising, academic regulations, and post-secondary administrative processes.
- Experience using assessment, reporting, and data analytics to inform service improvement and decision-making.
- Exceptional relationship-building skills and the ability to establish credibility with students, faculty, staff, and senior leaders.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategy, lead innovation, and implement sustainable solutions in complex environments.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, consultation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, reconciliation, and student-centered service excellence.

Salary: The salary range, based on 1.0 FTE, is $94,864.00 - 158,925.00 per annum. The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
